Description

Oct. 29, 1929. E. A. GILDE CLOTHESLINE SUPPORT Filed Dec. 1, 1927 Patented Oct. 29. 1929 UNITED ";PAT FF C t- 7 ERNST ALFRED GILLDE, or UNION our, new JERSEY c GLOTHESLINE. surromi Application filed December 1, 1927. Serial No. 237,071
to provide a novel and improved device attachable to the outside of a window sash or frame and adapted to be swung within the room so as to permit the clothes to be fastened on the said clothes line rior to its being carried outside the window sash.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a safety device in the form of an arm having a pulley or roller on its inner end anl over which the clothes line'is trained, said arm being of a length to be fastened on the outside of the window sash or frame and swung within the room proper so that the clothes may be suspended and fastened to the line and carried outside the window sash.
To enable others skilled in the art to more fully understand and appreciate my invention and its practical application for the purpose and use intended, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which 7 Fig. 1 is a side view showing my invention and its relation to the window sashes and window frame.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device detached from the sash.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a partial perspective view showing the position of the line when the arm is in its inoperative position.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters An extension arm 8 is provided at one end i with a pair of parallel, fiat bars 9. 10, riveted thereto as at 11 and extending beyond the extreme outer end thereof, said bars supp0rt-- ing a short shaft 12 on which a roller. is mounted and over which the clothes line 14: is trained.
The opposite end of theextension arm'is equipped with a swiveled eye bolt 15 passing therethrough, said bolt having an eye 16 forming a guide for the top strand of the line, the
designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 desiglower end of'said bolt being formed with an open hook15 on'which the lower strand of the line may be supported as shown more clearly by Fig. 1." 'Pivotally attached to the i eye bolt is a U-shaped connector 17 ,said con nector being in turn fastened to the interconnected, link 18 and screw eye 19, the latter being attached to the frame of the window.
In order to maintain the extension arm'in" its horizontal or operative osition when projected within the room, the said 'arm' is equipped with a screw eye 20 to which the hook 21 isfastenedand adapted to engage the screw eyeQQ. By disconnecting the hook, the extension arm may be swung outwardly through the window and lowered to the dotted line position, after the clothes have been suspended on the line and carried outside the sash. In this position the window maybe lowered without interference. on the other hand when it is desired toeither removethe clothes or fasten the clothes onthe line, the 7 lower strand may be disconnected from the open hook 15 as shown in full lines by Fig. 1. This will produce slack in the lower strand of the line and permits the clothes to pass .L I
the hookportion 15 of the bolt. Whenthe lower strand is positioned on thehook, the
arm may be projected out through the window i and lowered to its inoper'ative'or dottedline position.
It will be notedthat the stress and strain is for the greater part placed on the eye bolt 7 rather than the extension arm; so that the lattermaybeofverylight material, such as wood, instead of providing a metal'arm. If
so'desired, the roller 13 may be adjustably connected to the fiat bars where it is desired to allow for stretching of the line.
While I have shown and described by inrealize that various alterationsand changes vention" with some degree of particularity, I 4
in the details may be made. I therefor re-. 7
serve the right to make such modifications in the structure as may fairly fall within the scope of the subject matter being claimed.
Having shownand described my invention, I what I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent is:
A clothes line supportcomprising an ex-* I I tension arm having a roller and means at its outer end for supporting said roller, and an eye bolt passing through the opposite end of said arm,'said eye bolt constituting a guide for the top strand of arclothes line, a'hook on the bottom of said eye bolt below the arm for supporting the bottomfstrand of said clothes line in one position, a U-shaped connector having its arms attached to the ends of said eye bolt and extending beyond the end of said arm, a link, and an interconnected screw eye fastened to said connector, said screw eye being attachable to the frame of a Window and Wherebysaid arm maybe swung from a Vertical, inoperative position to a laterally operative position through said frame of the Window. 7 r a ,In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
