To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, Oris R. GALE, citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to a device for drying clothes and the like.

It consists of links or hangers suspended from the ceiling of a room, said links or hangers carrying at their lower ends a center hub adapted to receive radial arms or rods upon which the clothes may be hung. The links are parallel with each other and pivoted at such points that When the hub swings from its dependent to its elevated position it is maintained in a horizontal plane.

In combination with this device is an automatic latch by which the parts are maintained in their elevated position, and means by which said latch may be disengaged to allow the parts to drop into the position for use.

It also comprises a combination of parts and details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing the device in full lines in raised position and in dotted lines when dependent. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of the ceiling attachment, and the yoke. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan View of the hub. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the ceiling bracket and yoke.

It is the object of my invention to provide a convenient device for drying clothes within an apartment, and to provide means by which the device may be elevated close to the ceiling and out of the Way when not in use, and readily dropped into the position in which it is to be used.

A indicates the ceiling of a room, to which a p ate or support 2 may be fixed. From this support depends a lug 3, to which links or hangers 4 and 5 are pivoted, the pivot points being in diiferent horizontal and vertical planes, so that the links, when raised into horizontal position or depending Ain vertical position, will be parallel with each other. At the opposite ends these links are similarly connected with a hub 6 by pivots, which are also in different planes, and this insures a constant horizontal position of the hub. The lower part of the hub has openings made in it, as at 7, for the reception of arms or rods 8, which may be easily slipped into the hub or removed therefrom.

9 is a pulley journaled in proximity to the ceiling, and a cord l0 passes over this pulley and has oneend secured to the hub 6 so that by means of this cord the links 4 and 5 and the hub may be dropped into the position shown in dotted lines, or drawn up to the position shown in full lines.

l2 is a yoke having upwardly extending arms pivoted at 13, so that the yoke may swing back and forth. The cord 10 passes through the yoke. The opposite end of the yoke has latches 14 which are adapted to automatically engage pins l5`vvhen the hub has been raised to the ceiling and the yoke allowed to swing freely. When the device is raised into this position, by pulling upon the cord the latch .will be pulled away from the pin, if the rope is pulled at alittle angle, but by bringing the hub into a substantially vertical position the latch will be allowed to swing so as to automatically engage the holding pins and retain the parts 1n position.

When it is desired to lower the apparatus by a pull outwardly upon the cord the latter is caused to engage the yoke 12 and the parts are slightly raised, thus causing the latch to swing clear of the suspending pins; then by slacking the cord the device will drop into the position shown in dotted lines and will be in readiness to receive the rods for drying purposes. l An apparatus thus constructed is exceedmgly convenient and useful in places where but little space can be afforded for the purpose to which it is devoted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is:

l. The combination in a clothes drier, of a hub having radial openings, rods adapted to it therein and to form a support, suspending links, means for raising the hub about the pivoted points of the links and means for securing the device in its raised position, said last-named means including a swinging latch pivoted to a fixed support and adapted to be engaged and to latch with the hub when the drier is moved from an operative into an inoperative position.

2. The combination in a clothes drier, of a radial rod-supporting hub, parallel links pivoted to the hub and ceiling and having their pivot pins in different horizontal and vertical planes whereby the hub is maintained in a horizontal position when both raised and lowered, and a latching device for holding the hub in its elevated position.

3. The combination in a clothes drier, of aradial rod supporting hub, parallel links pivoted to said hub in different planes, a rceiling plate to which said links are also pivoted in different planes, whereby the hub is maintained in a horizontal plane in either' of its positions, a swinging latch adapted to automatically hold the parts in elevated position, a cord connected with the huby and passing through the latch yoke, and a guide pulley for said cord.

4. The combination in a clothes drier, of a radial rod supporting hub, parallel links pivoted to the ceiling support in different planes7 and similarly pivoted to the hub, a suspended yoke, a latch carried therewith adapted to automatically engage and ret-ain the parts in a position parallel with the ceil-v ing, a cord attached to the hub, and a fixed guide pulley over which it passes, said cord passing` through the yoke and adapted when pulled to disengage the latch and allow the parts to drop into position for use.
