CLOTHES-LINE I-IGLDER AND FASTEITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1918.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,619.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL F. CUBIAC, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of h'lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a clothes line holder and fastener and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide an attaching base, having an arm pivoted thereto, which has a pulley journaled thereon for receiving one end of a clothes line and having means on its other end for gripping or binding the end of the clothes line into an engagement with the attaching base, to prevent the line from becoming detached from its support. a
A. further object of this invention is to provide an extension upon the lower end of the attaching base plate having a pair of relatively spaced guide lugs for receiving the end of the clothes line after said line has been passed over the pulley and which is clamped by the lower end of the arm, under,
the influence of the weight of the line upon the pulley.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a bracket, having a vertically extending pulley thereon, whereby a number of said brackets may be arranged upon posts for supporting the clothes line between its ends.
.Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of'construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will.
applied to I supporting posts, having a clothes line attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a clothes line fastener, constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionalview of the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the clothes line holder, and
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the nu meral 1 indicates a plurality of supporting posts having my invention applied thereto.
The end supporting post has secured thereto an elongated base plate 2, which is provided withcountersunk openings 8 for receiving screws for securing the same to the post. A pivot lug dis formed upon the attaching base plate 2 intermediate its ends and has secured thereto a bolt 5 for pivotally supporting a clamping lever 6. A suitable nut 7 is carried by the bolt 5 for retaining the .arm 6 thereon. The arm 6 is provided with its upper end bent upwardly and outwardly as illustrated at 8 and having an enlarged portion 9 formed upon its end. A transversely extending bolt 10 is carried by the enlarged portion 9 of the lever 6 and has journaled thereon a grooved pulley 11, which is supported in vertical alinement with the arm 6. The lower end of the lever 6 is provided with a pair of relatively spaced guide lugs 12 upon the under side thereof for receiving the end of a clothes line 13 after it has been passed over the pulley 11. The under side of the lever 6 adjacent the pivot point thereof is provided with a vertically extending groove for receiving the clothes line it passes downwardly from the pulley 11 to the guide lugs 12.
Formed on the lower end of the attaching plate 2 and extending at right angles thereto is a clamping arm 14 having formed thereon adjacent its lower edge a pair of relatively spaced guide lugs 15 for receiving the free end of the clothes line 13 after passing between the guide lugs 12 of the lever 6. A plurality of transversely extending ribs 16 are formed on the arm 14 above the guide lugs 15 for biting into the clothes line 13 when pressed thereon by the lower end of the lever 6. The weight of the clothes line upon the pulley 11 will cause the lower end of the lever 6 to move in the direction of the clothes line against the ribs it thus prevent ng the clo line from becoming detached from the pulley l1,
A suitable braclte l7 provided with countersunk openings 18 for receiving screws for attaching said bracket to the intermedi ate posts. in upwardly and outwardly directed extension 19 formed upon the upper end of the bracket 17 and is enlarged illustrated at 20 to form a supporting base, which has formed thereon a guard 21c);- tending in the direction of the vertical plane of the bracket 17. suitable bolt is secured to the base 20 and has journaled thereon a grooved pulley 23. the clothes line 13 has-one of its ends securec to the attaching plate 2 and is then passed around a number of the pulleys carried by the bracket 17 upon the intermediate posts arranged within a yard and the other end of the clothes line then attachec to anotherattaching plate 2, upon the other end. post.
The veig ht of clothing suspended upon the clothes line 13 will cause pulling action upon the pulley ll of the attaching plate and will cause the lower ends of the levers (3 to clamp tighter upon the tree ends of the clothes line 13 as the wei 'ht upon said clothe line is incrcasel, thus obviating the danger or the clothes line 13 slipping or of parts may be made without departing.
from the spirit and scope of the invention claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A device of the character set forth comprising a vertically disposed elongated base plate, a pirot lug extending outwardly from 1e outer face of the base plate at a point tween the ends thereof, a clamping arm iOCZltQCl at the lower end of the base plate and extending laterally from one side edge thereof and having its outer face serrated, a rried hythe pivot lug and extending rclroin beyond said side edge or i ate and located outwardly beyond clamping arm, an angle clamping lever xertically disposed and pivoted intermediate its ends to said bolt, one arm of said lever extending downwardly and inwardly from said bolt in the direction of said clamping arms and having vertical clan'iping face courting with the serrated face of said clamping arm, a pair of relatively spaced lugs extending outwardly from the outer face of said clamping arm at a point below the lower end oi said lower arm, a pair of relatively spaced lugs extending" inwardly :t'roin said lower arm at a point above said clamping arm, the upper arm of said clamping lever extending laterally and outwardly and thence upwardly and outwardly with respect to said lever arm, a boltfcarried by the upper end of said upper arm and extending lat rally therefrom in the direction t and arranged parallel to said base plate, and grooved roller journaled upon said last named bolt.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence or two witnesses.
