Patented July 16, 1872.

MARTIN LANDENBERGER AND CHARLES H. LANDENBERGER, OF PHILA- DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN SHAWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,570, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing an Improved Shawl, invented by MARTIN LANDENBERGER and CHARLES H. LANDENBERGER, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- Our invention consists of a shawl to which a highly ornamental and attractive appearance is imparted at a cheap rate, partly by weaving and partly by printing, as described hereafter.
The figure in the accompanying drawing illustrates part of a shawl ornamented in accordance with our invention.
A represents a portion of the shawl orna mented by stripes, produced in the usual manner by weaving, these stripes being in such groups and colors and of such width as the taste of the manufacturer may suggest. At intervals throughout the shawl the stripes may be printed by any of the usual processes practiced in printing fabrics. In the present instance, the portion B of the shawl consists of a plain white stripe ornamented by black stripes a a and black floral and foliated devices, all imparted by printing on the white ground; but it will be understood that this is but one example of an almost endless variety of devices which can be printed on the fabric, the configuration, colors, and disposal of the printed ornaments depending on the taste of the designer and manufacturer and the caprices of fashion.
. Striped and plaid shawls of many colors and patterns are produced at a comparatively cheap rate by the ordinary process of weaving but to remove the general sameness from shawls of this character, either by Jacquard weaving or embroidery,is a costlymatter. Most elaborately ornamented shawls can, however, be produced at a cheap rate by weaving the striped or plaid patterns and by printing such complex or simple devices as will harmonize with the said stripes or plaids, and impart a pleasing effect to the whole.
\Vithout claiming, broadly, a fabric ornamented in the manner described, we claim as our invention, and as a new article of manufacture and commerce- A shawl ornamented partly by weaving and partly-by printing, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
