IMPROVEMENT IN PREPARING YARN FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SHAWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,208, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. NAGLEE BRUNER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Art of Preparing Yarns for the Manufacture of Shawls, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in a novel method of producing a variegated colored yarn, as hereinafter set forth.
In the manufacture of yarns, as heretofore practiced, it has been customary to dye the yarn in spots, so that it may be Woven to form designs, and difl'erent-colored yarns have been twisted together to form a parti-colored yarn for the same purpose, each of which plans is attended with more expense and requires a longer time than my process, which consists in printing or stamping upon the yarn at regular intervals white lead or other pigment, so as to produce a variegated-colored yarn, which may be woven to form difl'erent designs for shawl-patterns. .The intervals at which the pigment is stamped or printed upon the yarn may be varied at pleasure, and a corresponding difference in the appearance of the woven fabric consequently produced. Various means of applying the pigment to the yarn may be made use of, which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. For example, the yarns may be passed between fluted rolls, upon which the pigment is spread, or it may be passed under a reciprocating die, for
the same purpose.
