FAN ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 25,1919.
Application filed November 26, 1915. Serial No. 63,365.
ments in Fan Attachments that are Adapted to be Attached to Rocking-Chairs, Cradles, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an attachment that is adapted to be secured to a rocking element, such as a rocking chair, whereby power will be given to the attachment when the chair is rocked so that a revolubly mounted fan, which is attached to the chair adjacent the head of the occupant, can be actuated.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking chair showing this improved motor applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a rocking chair having the usual rockers 2, said chair having the usual back supports 3.
Formed on the rear end of each of the rockers 2 is a seating portion 4. Secured to said seating portions 1- in any suitable manner are the ends 5 of a transversely arranged support 6. Extending upwardly from said support 6, adjacent each end thereof is a bearing support 7 on which are formed bearings 8, and mounted in said bearings is a horizontally arranged shaft 9. Securely mounted on each end of said shaft 9 is a pulley 10.
Formed intermediate of the ends of the support 6 and extending upwardly therefrom is a housing 11, said housing being for the reception of a gear 12 which is keyed to the shaft 9, and a rack bar 13, said housing also serving as a guide, as shown at 14:, to said rack bar. Mounted to said housing is a plate 16 which is adapted to close said housing. Mounted on the upper end of the rack bar 13 is a bar 17, said bar being for the support of the upper end of a pair of coil springs 18, the lower end of said springs being secured to the support 6.
Secured to the upper end of each of the chair back supports 3 is'a shaft bearing 19, and revolubly mounted in each of said bear ings is a horizontally arranged shaft 20.
Mounted on one end of each of said shafts is a pulley 21 and mounted on the opposite ends of said shaft-s is a fan blade 22. Mounted on each of the pulleys 21 is an endless belt 23, each of said belts also being mounted at their opposite ends to each of said pulleys 10. Secured to the lower end of the rack bar 13 is a roller 24. g Y
In the operation of this improved device. when the parts are attached to a rocking chair as just related and the occupant of the chair applies weight rearwardly sothat the rear portions of the rockers 2 will be moved toward the floor line 25, the teeth of "andto the pulleys 21 and shafts 20 through the medium of the belts 23, thereby causing the fan blades 22 to be turned. When forward motion is applied to the chair by the occupant, the rear ends of the rockers 2 will be elevated from the floor line 25, and the springs 18 which are secured to the support.
6 and bars 17 will exert a downward force on said bar, thereby holding the roller 24 which is secured to the lower end of said rack bar against the floor and as the gear 12 is carried upwardly by the support 6, said gear will be caused to move in a direction opposite to that which was given to it when the rearward movement was applied to the rockers 2. From the aforesaid description it is therefore seen when forward and rearward motion is given to the rocking chair by the occupant an intermittent movement will be given to the fan blades 22 and inasmuch as there is a fan blade arranged on each side of the head of the occupant, the occupant will be gently fanned by the fan blades.
Inasmuch as the rear ends of the rockers 2 will travel toward and away from the floor line 25, it is essential that the roller 2 1 of the rack bar 13 be held against the floor during the rocking motion of the rockers.
As shown in the drawings, the springs 18 merely tend to pull downwardly on the rack bar, or if desired, a weight of sufiicient capacity can be mounted adjacent the upper end of the rack bar, said weight and rack bar being adapted to actuate the gear 12 as said gear is being carried upwardly by the rockers 2.
What we claim is:
1. In combination, a rocking member, a pair of runners for said member, a support mounted on said runners, a rack bar slidably mounted in said support, a shaft carried by said support, a gear meshing with said rack bar secured to said shaft, a pair of pulleys mounted on said shaft, a pair of fan blades mounted on said rocking member, said pul leys being operatably connected to said blades, said gear when carried in one direction by said member adapted to bear against and travel on the teeth of; said rack bar, and means connected to said rack bar and said support adapted to cause said rack. bar. to bear against the teeth of Said gear when said gear is carried in an opposite direction by said member, said rack bar and; said gear providing means for revolving said fan blades.
2. In combination, a rocking member, a pair of runners for said member, a support having a housing formed thereon mounted on said runners, a rack bar slidably mounted in said housing, a shaft carried by said support passing through said housing, a gear meshing with said rack bar secured to said shaft and mounted in said housing, a pair of pulleys mounted on said shaft, a pair of fan blades mounted on said rocking member.
travel in an opposite direction.
3. In combination, a rocking member, a pair of runners for said member, a support transversely secured to said runners, a pair of bearings formed on said support, a housing formed on said support intermediate of said bearings, a shaft revolubly. mounted in said bearings and passing through said housing, a gear secured to said shaft and mounted in said housing, a rack bar slidably mounted in said housing in mesh with said gear, having its lower end bear against the floor, a spring connected at one end to the upper end of said rack bar and at its opposite end to said support, a pulley mounted adjacent each end of said shaft, and a pair of fan blades mounted on said rocking member, said pulleys being operably connected to said blades.
