FAN ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907'.
Application filed May 26,1906- Serial No. 318,973.
in Fan Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fans designed especially for use on rocking chairs, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be readily installed for use, and one wherein the fans chair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying an oscillatory fan-carrying shaft, adapted for attachment to the chair, one wherein the shaft will be positively moved in one direction when the chair is rocked and automatically rotated in the opposite direction during forward movement of the chair.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair equipped with a plurality of fans embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail, sectional view of one of the side fan operating shafts, the section being taken centrally and longitudinally through the shaft. Fig. 4 is an elevation on an enlarged scale of one'of the shaft-operating springs. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the bearing brackets.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a rocking chair of the usual or any appropriate construction and material having rockers 2., and comprising a seat 3 and a back 4, which latter includes vertical side members or styles 5 extended downward below the seat 3 to form rear legs 6 connected at their lower ends to the rockers 2.
Fixed to each of the standards 5 is a bearing member or ring 19 in which is journaled for rotation a side fan-operating shaft 20 provided at its upper end with a forwardly extending arm 21 carrying a fan 22 and having at its lower end a tubular portion or section 23 in which is arranged a spiral spring 24 will be automatically actuated during the rocking movement of the that the shaft will,
fixed at its upper end to the shaft and at its lower end to a relatively movable pin 25 projected downward through a cap 26 fitting on the lower end of the shaft, the pin, which is adapted for rotation relative to the shaft, be-
ing of square or other non-circular form and adapted to fit in a correspondingly shaped? opening 27 provided in the bearing bracket 28 attached to the seat 3 and having at its rear end a pair of spaced vertical ears 29 in which is journaled aguide pulley 30 on which is arranged for travel aflexible traction cord or connection 31 having its upper end, which is wrapped or coiled a number of times around the shaft 20, terminally engaged with the latter and its lower end attached to the vertical portion or arm 32 of an operating spring 33 provided with a substantially horizontal forwardly extending arm 34 fixed to the adj acent rocker 2, the arm 32 being arranged for vertical movement in a guide 35 fixed to the rocker.
In the operation of the device, when the chair is rocked rearwardly the spring 33 com ing in contact with the floor surface moves the portion or arm 32 upwardly, thereby slacking the connection 31 and allowing the shaft 20 to rotate in one direction under the influence of spring 24, the cord 31 being at the same time wound upon the shaft. As the chair rocks forwardly the spring 33 in again expanding moves the portion or arm 32 downward and exerts traction on the cord 31 for rotating the shaft 20 in the opposite direction, it being understood that the spring 33 is of a strength sufficient to overcome the tension of spring 24 while rotating the shaft against the action of the latter, and further,
during the rocking motion of the chair, be continuously operated for actuating the fan 22.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A fan attachment for rocking chairs comprising a rotary operating shaft having a tubular portion, a spring arranged in said portion and connected for rotating the shaft in one direction, a second spring attached to the chair rocker and having a vertically movable arm adapted for reciprocation during rocking motion of the chair, and a flexible connection engaged with said arm and with the shaft, said connection being wound on the shaft and adapted for rotating the same in one direction against the action of the first named spring.
2. A fan attachment for rocking chairs comprising a rotary operating shaft, a spring operatively connected With the shaft for rotatingi the same in one direction during rearward movement of the chair, a second spring having an arm adapted for reciprocation during rocking motion of the chair, and a connection between said arm and shaft for rotating the latter in the other direction against the action of the first named spring.
3. A fan attachment for rocking chairs comprising a bearing attached to the chair and provided with a non-circular opening, a rotary fan operating shaft sustained on the chair and having a tubular portion, a spring arranged in said portion and connected at one end with the shaft, a pin rotatably mounted in the tubular portion and engaged with the other end of the spring, said pin having 'a non-circular portion fitted in said hear ing opening for rotation relative to the shaft, a second spring attached to the chair rocker and having an arm arranged for reciprocation during rocking movement of the chair,
and a connection between the arm and shaft for rotating the latter against the action of the first named spring.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH. F. DORRIS. Witnesses:
