FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS;
Application filedsj'une 1Q,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Oct. 1,1912. 1911. Serial No. eaa4oe.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JosEPH Csonros, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is The present invention relates to, Certain,' novel and useful improvements in fan attachment for rocking chairs. v
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of this class which may be applied to the chair and which is actuated to operate a fan without any effort on the part of the person occupying the chair otherwise than rocking the latter.
It is also my purpose to provide a simple, strong and durable device which may be easily and readily attached to and detached from a chair, as desired, and which will not interfere with the chair or the comfort of the occupant.
Furthermore, it is my purpose to provide an attachment which may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
lVith the above-recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken through the pivoted spring tension frame of the rocking attachment.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the letter A indicates an ordinary rocking chair to the rockers of which, at the rear of the chair is attached a cross bar. Between the rockers are the lugs 2 to which lugs is pivoted a bent lever 3 of metal or other suitable material having one end provided with a roller 4: designed to bear against the floor or ground while' the opposite or inner end of the lever has attached thereto a small coiled spring 5 to which is connected one end of a cord or wire 6 which is extended vertically upward and is connected at 7 to one of the lower ends of the frame 8. This frame comprises i a hub 9 pivoted as at, 10 to the backof the chair, said hub having rods 11 radiating therefrom, the ends of said rod being connected to a bore or semicircular band 12. A
as 14 to one of the rods 11 while the body port1on of the spring is coiled about the pivot 10 of the hub 8, and connected .to
said pivot so that the tendency of the spring ISILQIIHiLllY to throw the bow frame into up right position, as sh own in Fig. 1. Vertically secured to the back of the chair is a post or rod 15 having an eye 16 at the upper end thereof forming a bearing for the shaft 17 of the fan 18. In the present instance the fan/is shown as having two blades, but it will, of course, be understood that it may have any number of blades and may be of any approved shape or dimensions. Carried by the end of the shaft of the frame projecting through the bearing is a small pulley or grooved wheel 19 over which passes a drive belt or cord 20, the ends of the cord being connected to opposite sides of the bow 12, as at 21.
The above is a description of a mechanical arrangement of my improved attachment, and from such description the opera tion of the same will be readily apparent. If the chair is rocked backward the upper end of the lever, or that to which the wire or cable is attached is depressed, thereby pulling the frame downward or over to one side upon the pivot 10 against the tension of the coiled flat spring, so that the belt or cable 20 imparts a rotary motion to the fan shaft in one direction. As the pressure is released upon the lever, for instance, when the'chair is rocked forward, the pressure spring at the frame tends to restore the latter to its normal vertical position, thereby operating the belt or cable 20 in the opposite direction and imparting a reverse move- 'ment to the frame. Thus, it will be seen that as long asa chair is rocked the fan will turn first one way and then the other, depending floor.
It will be seen that I have provided a simple, convenient and efficient form of fan attuated when the chair is rocked. Furtherfiat coiled spring 13 has one end connected tachment which may be readily applied to the chair and which will be posltlvely acv upon the lever is released and the coiled leaf upon the contact with the lever and the more, by the use of my device, I dispense with all motors, complicated spring arrangements and the like.
Having thus described the invention, I claim The combination with a chair, of a vertically extending post secured to the back of said chair, a shaft rotatablyjournaled in the upper end of said post, a fan carried by said shaft, a lever pivoted between the rockers of the chair, a semicircular bowed frame pivoted to the back of the chair and comprising a hub, arms radiating from the hub and a semicircular band inclosing and secured to the free ends of the arms, a spring tensioning said frame and having a portion coiled about the pivotal connection of the semicircular bowed frame with the back of the chair and one end secured to such pivotal connection, while the opposite end is fast to one of the arms radiatin from the hub of the frame, a spring tensloned cable connected to the end of the latter and to ,the frame, a pulley at the end of the fan shaft, and a drive belt connected to the ends of the bowed frame and trained over said pulley to turn the fan in reverse directions according to the movement of the chair.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
