ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS G. MOOARTY, OF BERNIE, MISSOURI.
CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,946, dated February '7, 1899.
6 Application filed March 25,1898.
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. McOARTY, residing at Bernie, in the county of Stoddard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cradles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cradles of the motor-operated class.
The novelty of my invention lies in the peculiar combination of elements to be'hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, like numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one embodiment of my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a View in end elevation of the same with the fly-brush removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the motor, drivinggear, &c. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the cradle-balance weight applied, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the notched disk upon the eccentric shaft. 7
In the drawings, 1 1 represent end frames, which are joined by cross rods or braces 2 2 and provide a support for a cradle 3, trunnioned in bearings 4 of the end frames and adapted to rock or oscillate under the action of a motor to be later on described.
. 5 represents a weight dovetailed upon a guide 6 and adj ustably held, as by means of v a set-screw, in position to balance the cradle and produce a uniform motion.
7 represents a fan or fiy-brush of any suitable form carried by a vertical shaft 8, rotatably supported in bearings 9 9 and removably stepped in the socketed extremity of an alined shaft 10, which latter is mounted in similar bearings 11 and is driven, through bevel-gears 12 13, by a second motor 11.
As the motors here employed are of the well-known spring-driven type, a detail description of the same is thought unnecessary. Motion from the cradle-motor 15 is transmitted toa rocking lever 16 through multiplyinggearing 17 and eccentric 18, which latter operates in a slot 19 of the lever 16 above mentioned. Forming a continuation of this lever is a spring-arm 16, whose upper end lies be- Sarial No. 675,199. (No model.)
ment with a toothed or notched disk 21 upon the eccentric shaft.
The fan or fiy-brush motor is arranged en tirely independent of the cradle mechanism, and motion therefrom to the fly-brush is transmitted through the gearing 23. A device 24:, similar to that just described, is provided'for checking and stopping the same.
The operation is as follows: After the weight has been properly adjusted to balance the cradle the controlling-lever is shifted to disengage the stop, whereupon motion is at once imparted to the rocking lever, causing the same to oscillate and through the spring extension transmitting the movement to the cradle. It will be noted that by reason of the spring connection between the cradle and rocking lever an even and perfectly easy motion will result, and sudden shocks or jerking will be prevented. By shifting the con= trolling-lever of the fly-brush motor the latter may be thrown into motion in the manner just described.
What I claim as new is- The combination with a cradle and its sup porting-frame, of a weight adj ustably mount ed upon the cradle to regulate its oscillation,- a motor, and power-transmitting mechanism, comprising a motor-driven eccentric, a rock ing lever slotted to receive the eccentric, a resilient arm forming a continuation of said lever with its free end lying between and e11- gaging twin projections of the cradle and a motor-controlling device, as specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS C. MCOARTY.
