"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'VILLIAM HENRY CLAYTON, OF VILLA RICA, GEORGIA.
SEWING-MACHINE MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming pai-t of Letters Patent No. 364,216, aatea rune '7, las?.`
Application tiled October 20, 1886. Serial No. 216,747. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM HENRY CLAY- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Villa Rica, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 ot' the drawings is a representation of a side elevation. Fig. 2 is au end elevation, partly iu section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Myinvent-ion relates to sewing-machine motors; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed..
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 2 desiguatcsthc frame of the motor, said frame being suitably braced to give it the necessary strength. The frame 2 is provided with feet 12 and 13, through which screws are passed into the stand or other support, upon which the motor is mounted to give it the necessary elevation with reference to the machine to be driven thereby.
17 is a horizontal bar, in which the shaft of the drivinggear 16 is journaled, said shaft pro jecting laterally frpm the bar 17. The shaft 18 of the drivinggear 16 is provided with a worni-w.heel, 19, which is engaged by a wormpinion, 20, on the winding -shaft 11, which shaft 11 is supported in bearings in hangers 22 and 253, depending lfrom the horizontal bar 17, and is movable longitudinally in its bearings to permit the worm-pinion to be thrown .i u and out of gear with the worm-wheel 19.
The worm-wheel 19 is provided with a coil; spring, 24, one end of which is connected to the said wheel, and the other end to the shaftv 18, upon which shaft the spring is coiled when the winding-shaft is operated to wind the motor.
The teeth of the driving-gear 16 engage the teeth of the large gearwheel 3, which is journaled on a shaft secured in the frame of the motor. The large gear-wheel 3 engages apinion, 7, on the shaft of the gear-wheel et, and the gear-wheel 4 engages the teeth ofthe gearwheel 6 on the pul1ey-shaft 15, journalcd in the depending arm 26 of theframe, near the lower end of said arm 2G. The curved arm or regir lating-lever 2S is pivoted to the depending arm 2G, and to arm 28, near its lower end, is secured a curved arm, 27, in the upper end of which is journaled the shaft 15. 26 is practically a spring-arm, and it may be deflected sufficiently, by means presently described, to adjust the wheel 6 into and out of gear with the large wheel 4t. The pulley 25 on shaft 15 is connected by a belt, 30, with a small pulley, 31, on the sewing-machine.
The regulating lever is operated by a threaded cranked rod, 9, which is seated in the lever near its lowerend, and is seated, also, in the short uprighti of the frame of the 1notor, so that said lever may be moved in and outby said crank-rod 9 to start or stop the sewing-machine.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is*
In a sewingmachine motor, the combination of the main frame having a standard provided with a depending` yielding arm, 2(3,a
curved regulating-lever, 2S, provided with an adjusting device at its lower end and secured to said arm 26, an arm, 27, pivoted to level' 28, a shaft, 15, journaled in the arm 2G and 27, and bearing a pinion and apulley,a wheel,
4, adapted to engage with the teeth of pinion G, and applied on a shaft bearing aspur-wheel, 7, engaging with a spur-wheel, 3, aspur-,wheeh 16, engaging with wheel 3, and keyed on shaft 18,a worm-wheel also applied on this shaft and provided with a driving-spring, and a wormpinion keyed ou an` endwise-adjustable windingalp shaft, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM HENRY CLAYTON.
