UNION-GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed September 15, 1917. Serial No. 191,646.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALVATORE DE BELLA, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of NewYork and State of New ,York, have invented new ---and useful Improvements in Union-Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to under garments and the main object ofthe invention is the provision of a union garment made up of standardized parts, so designed and arranged as to provide for the employment of aslidable seat, which, while adapted to be opened, is so arranged that it cannot flare or fall away from the body of the wearer.
Another objectof the invention is to combine with a union garment a slidable seat, which is capable of girth adjustment and of being used as a drop seat independent of the slidable seat, of which it is a part.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a union garment which has parts so designed as not to cause wastage of materialsin order to out the crotch portions of the parts, and finally which has parts so designed that a crotch element may be applied without bringing the connecting seams into such position that they may prove a source of discomfort to the wearer.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a rear perspective view of the garment, showing the slidable seat in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the slidable seat in open position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another form of the slidable seat, capable of being opened independently and capable of being adjusted in the direction of the girth of the wearer, the adjustable parts being shown in closed position.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to that of Fig. 3, but showing the adjustable parts of the slidable seat in partial open position.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the standardized parts of the garment, showing the same detached, but in relative position for assembly.
Fig.6 is a plan view, showing, due to the cut of the parts, the opening provided upon assembly, which opening is closed by the ap plication of the crotch element.
With more particular reference to the ac companying drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a garment made in accordance with my invention, and comprising the following standardized parts, the two front members 11, a back member 12, the two members 13 comprising the rear parts of the complete leg portion and the crotch element 14.
While the garment here illustrated extends only to theknees of the wearer, being known as a short garment, it will be noted that the leg portions may be made to extend to the ankles of the wearer or to any distance between the knees or ankles of the wearer,-as desired, without any change in the design of the parts.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown, thefront parts 11 extend from the neck of the wearer to his knees. These parts are identical in form, one being intended for the right side and the other for the left side, of the body. United, by seams as 15, between these front parts 11, is'the back element 12, which extends from the neck of the wearer to a suitable distance below the waist line terminating preferably in a rounded or tail portion 16.
The parts 13, representing the rear elements of the leg portions, are partly united to the lower ends of the front elements 11, on each side, by seams as 17, in such manner as to leave a longitudinal opening or unconnected stretch as 18 on the side of each hip to allow for the sliding movement of the upper portion of the said leg parts 13, which are united along their adjacent edges by a seam 19, thereby enabling the upper portions of these leg elements to be moved together as one piece.
These leg parts 13, at each side adjacent the openings 18, are turned and sewed upon themselves so as to provide suitable passageways 20 for the reception of bands or tapes as 21, the lower ends of which are sewed rigid with the seams 17, while the upper ends of these bands or tapes are sewed fast to the side or front elements 11, preferably directly underneath buttons as 22, secured to the front elements 11.
The upper ends of the leg parts 13 are hemmed so as to provide a partial securing band 24, the opposite ends of which are provided with eyes as 25 adapted to engage the buttons 22. In this manner I provide a seat 26 which may be disengaged from the buttons 22 and moved downwardly upon the tapes 21 in an obvious manner to provide the opening desired.
Instead of making a securing band as 2 1,1 may employ a band as 21 (indicated in Fig. 1 in dotted outline), which is sewed to the upper ends of the leg parts 13, and
which is also provided with eyes as 25, but Which is long enough to extend around the waist of the wearer so that the ends of the same can be buttoned together in front of the body ofthe wearer.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, there is no change in the form, assembly or operation of the slidable'seat'26, but here thesaid seat isprovided in its median vertical line with aslit 27 adapted to be closed as illustrated in Fig. 3, or to be fia'red open as illustrated in Fig. 1, the band 24: in this case being made in two parts, 28 and 29, the part 28 being prefera'bly provided with an extension 30 having an eye 31 suitable for engagement upon a choice of buttons as 32 in order to provide for girth adjustment. The other band 29 is also provided with an eye 33 adapted to be engaged upon a choice of buttons as 3%, arrai'i'ged upon the band 30, in order that the parts may be buttoned together inthe ad justment desired.
The side-elements 11, and the leg parts 13 are e'a-cli cutat the crotch portionwvith an edge as 36 in such manner that when the parts are assembled and united a diamond shaped opening as 37 Will be produced in the crotch port'ioi'i of the garment. To close this opening, I provide a crotch element or patch 14%, the s'eams as 38, by Which this patch is united to the adjacent par-ts, being adapted, under this construction, to occupy such positions upon the body of the wearer as to produce the least irritation or discom fiture possible.
Cutting the parts With crotch edges as 36 has another advantage which is important from a financial standpoint. It provides against an unnecessary Waste of materials, since the meeting edges of the side element-s 11 and leg partsl3 can be out substantially tapes passingth-rough said loops and engaged with said leg portions to retain'sal d seat element Without interfering With the free movement thereof for its unattached length, independent means for adjusting said seat element in girth direction, and means for detachably securing the said element to the body element.
2. In a union garment including body elements and leg elements, the combination of a seat portion adapted to slide vertically with respect to the body elements and leg elements, said seat element having a median vertical slit dividing its upper portion into two parts, and means for adj ustably connecting the said parts whereby to provide for girth adjustment. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
SALVATORE DE BELLA, JR.
