To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. Pnrrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Belts and Fastening Means Therefor, and declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The invention relates to belts and fastening means therefor and its object is a device of the character described adapted to allow expansion or contraction thereof when in positionabout the user. An additional object of the invention is a device of the character described which not only allows for expansion or contraction but may be adjusted to fit different sized persons. These and other objects and the several novel features of the invention in its preferred form are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of one type of fastening means.

The preferred form of fastening means is shown in Fig. 3 which includes a belt 1 provided with several slots 2 therein. On the belt 1 is provided a binding member 3 provided with an adjusting thumb screw 4 thereon which is adapted to bind the two plates 3 and 5 together on the belt, as shown in Fig. 4. To the plate 3 are secured a number of spring members 6 having a catch member 7 secured at the opposite end thereof. On the opposite end of the belt 1 is a catch member 8 provided with an L shaped slot on the opposite sides thereof in the turned down edges 10. A screw 11 passes through gether about the user.

As can be seen from the drawing the member 3 may be secured within one of the slots 2 according to the desire of the user and the thumb screw 4 .turnedup to bind it in place, at which time by passing the L shaped opening 9 in the part 8 over the lugs 13 on the part 7 the belt is fastened to- It can be seen by using the springs 6 in theconstruction thereof the belt is yieldable and will give and take with any movement of the user. It is to be noted in Figs. 3 and 4 that the part 3 is provided with downward bent portions 14 which fit the edge of the belt and the part 8 is provided with downward bent portions 10 long enough to not only fit over the belt 1 and plate 12 but are also adapted to fit over the edges of the tongue on the belt 1 and hold it in alinement when secured about the user.

An alternative form of the device is shown in Fig. 1 which includes a belt 30 provided with a slot 31 therein through which a screw 32 may be passed to bind the plates 33 and 34 together on the belt, as shown in Fig. 5. The plate 34 is a loose plate, fitting between the legs 38 of the member 33 and the plates 5 and 12 shown by dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 7 are of the same general character. To the part 33 are secured several spring members 35 secured to a catch 36 at the opposite end thereof. The catch 36 is provided with an aperture 37 therein which is adapted to be secured to the catch member at the opposite end of the belt. It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the part 33 is provided with downward bent portions 38 on the side thereof to engage over the edge of the belt. This form of fastening means is more particularly adapted for use with trusses by placing a pad behind the springs 35 thus putting a tension on the pad which is constant while at the same time the belt is very yieldable. The belt is adaptable for use with different sized persons by securing the screw 32 in the desired position in the slot according to the wishes of the user. The springs may be attached to the members 3 and 13 or 33 and 36 by providing studs 40 on the members insertible within the ends of the coiled springs and soldered in place.

From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device while very yieldable may be provided with springs of sufficient strength to hold the garments of the user in the desired position the device being of comparatively cheap construction adjustable to any sized person and very efficient in operation. Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United :States is V V 1. The combination wit-h a vbelt having "a longitudinal slot, of a plate, 'a thumb screw rotatably secured therein adapted to pass through the slot, and a binding plate -hav-ing a threaded aperture for the screw whereby the belt may be gripped between the plates and the position ofthe platesadjusted longi tudinally of the belt.

In combination, a belt having a longitudinal slot, a plate extending across the belt and over each edge, a thumb screw rotatably secured therein adapted to pass through the slot in the belt, and abinding plate adapted to be received between the ends longitudinal slot near one end, of a binding device comprising binding members on opposite sides of the belt and-a binding screw therefor passing through the slot, 1a catch member 'spni-ngwonnected with .a binding member, and a complemental .catch member secured to the opposite end oithe belt, the unlimited adjustment of the binding device within the length of the slot permitting a minute variation in tension of the spring in the use of the belt. w
