To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN ROGERS FLAN- naar and ETHAN I.` DoDDs, citizens 0f the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, and more particularly to the means for closing the outer end of the bearing sleeve,the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means for quickly removing and replacing the closure for the bearing sleeve, to facilitate access t0 the staybolt for testing purposes.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 3 is an end view of the bearing sleeve, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cap.
1 represents a bearing sleeve having an interior curved face 2 which serves as a bearing for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a staybolt 4.
The sleeve 1 is provided at its outer end with an annular flange 5 having diametrically opposite recesses 6 and within the confines of said annular ange the bearing seat is formed with a seat 7 for a cap or closure 8. The peripheral portion ofl the annular flange 5 is recessed as at 9, whereby segmental shoulders 10 are formed for cooperation with segmental shoulders 11 on the edge of a locking head 12.
The cap or closure 8 is made concave for the accommodation of the head of the staybolt and the dimensions and configuration of the concavity are such as to provide a suitable clearance 13 for the staybolt head.
The securing head 12 incloses the cap or closure 8 and is provided interiorly with cam faces 14 for coperation with cam faces 15 on the cap or closure 8, but between Fig. 1, so that when the assembled cap and head are placed on the bearing sleeve, the fingers 20 will enter the recesses 6 in the annular flange 5 of said sleeve. The width of each finger 20 is appreciably less than the length of the recess 6 in the annular flange 5 in which it enters, so that the head 12 may be turned relatively to the cap to permit the operation of the cams lll-15.
When the cap 8 and head l2 are placed on the bearing sleeve and the head is given a partial turn, the segmental shoulders 11 therein, will move behind the segmental shoulders 10 on the bearing sleeve. At the same time, the coperation of the cams 14- 15 will operate t0 press the cap firmly to its seat and cause the shoulders l1 to bind against the shoulders 10,-thus securely clamping or locking the parts in place. It is apparent that by a partial turn of the locking or clamping head 12 in the reverse direction, the cap will be unlocked and both the head 12 and cap 8 can be promptly removed from the bearing sleeve to give free access to the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. In a-staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having a notched flange, of a cap to seat on said sleeve, a head inclosing said cap and adapted to engage said notched iange, cams between said head and cap, said head having slots, and fingers on the cap projecting through said slots and engaging said notched flange.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having a notched flange, of a cap to seat on said sleeve, a head inclosing said cap and adapted to engage said notched iiange, cams between said cap and head, a disk of yielding material between said cains, and means for limiting the turning of the cap relatively t0 the head.
3. In a staybolt structure, the Co1nbination with a bearing sleeve `having a notched flange, of a cap to seat on said sleeve, a head inclosing said cap and having segmental shoulders to engage said notched flange, said head having slots, fingers on the cap projecting through said slots and having limited movement in notches of said l notched flange and means coperating with the head and capvto clamp the cap on the bearing sleeve and bind the segmental shoulders of the head against the notched flange on the bearing sleeve.
