21:1,:IIIIQZIIIH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERICK O. FELLROTH, OF WESTBY, MONTANA.
POCKET.
Application filed March 6. 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERICK O. FELLROTH, a citizen of the United States, resident of WVestby, county of Sheridan, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for closing the opening or mouth of a ocket and particularly the pocket usually formed in the bib portion of a pair of overalls where a workman is accustomed to carry articles, such as a watch and the like, which frequently will drop out of the pocket as ordinarily constructed and be lost or broken when the workman stoops over in the course of his daily occupation.
The invention consists generally in various construction and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of an overall bib, showing the position of the pocket thereon and my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the pocket, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the manner of mounting the spring closing means in the wall of the pocket,
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the spring closing means.
In the drawing, 2 represents a portion of the bib of the overalls, which forms the rear wall of the pocket and 3 is a patch of suitable fabric which forms the outer or front wall of the pocket. This patch is stitched to the rear wall on the ends on one side, as indicated at 4:. On the other side the stitches are carried up near the longitudinal edge a. short distance and then inwardly to form loops, as indicated at 5, and then back to the ends of the pocket, leaving a gap or opening 6 along the middle portion of the pocket through which the hand may be thrust to place an article in the pocket or remove it therefrom. The loops 5 extend inwardly toward the middle of the pocket and form with the walls thereof little angular recesses or sub-pockets 7 in the ends of the main Specification of Letters Patent.

pocket and have the effect of preventing the article in the pocket when the bib is dropped down from sliding into the opening 6 and so out of the pocket.
For the purpose of closing this opening and directing articles past it from one end of the pocket to the other when the bib is dropped, I provide a fabric .fiap 8 having one portion folded upon the other and stitched together and to the rear wall of the pocket at 9. The flap is folded around a tension device consisting preferably of a piece of wire 10,-slightly bowed and having loops 11 formed on the ends thereof and at an angle to the main portion of the wire, so that when the wire is secured in the band and thrust into the opening of the ocket, the loops 11 will bear on the rear wall of the pocket while the wire itself will brace against the front wall, thereby stretching the flap 8 across the opening into the pocket and closing said opening effectually against the escape of any article which may be in the pocket. Whenever desired, the wearer may thrust his hand between the outer wall of the pocket and the flap 8, pressing the wire inwardly suiiiciently to allow the insertion of the hand to put anarticle in the pocket or withdraw it therefrom.
The closing means 10 may be made of any suitable gage of spring wire and its shape may be modified to adapt it for different styles and shape of pockets.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pocket closing means comprising a flap fitting within the pocket opening and secured to one wall thereof, a spring device mounted in said flap and having a curved portion for hearing against one wall of the pocket and loop portions for contact with the other wall of the pocket.
2. A pocket closing device comprising a flap stitched at one edge to a wall of the pocket in the opening thereof and projecting into said pocket, a section of curved spring wire mounted in that portion of said flap which projects into the pocket and having looped end portions for bearing on a wall of the pocket, the tension of said spring section being sufficient to hold it with its supporting fabric against the opposite wall of the pocket with a yielding pressure.
3. A pocket closing means comprising a comparatively narrow fabric flap fitting Within the pocket opening and secured at its outer edge to the corresponding Wall of the pocket and extending across the pocket opening, and a spring device mounted in the inner edge of said flap and having a middle portion for forcing the fabric flap against one Wall of the pocket and holding the ends of said spring device and the edges of said flap against the other Wall of the pocket with a yielding pressure. 10
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1918.
ERICK O. FELLROTH.
