INVENTOR WIN/E8858:
ATTORNEYS X Z my M/ mm r1. PEYERS. mwuw nmr. Washington. a. a
UNITED STATES PATENT @rricn SAMUEL I}. LEVY, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED TIPPET, MUFF,
AND CH EST-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,872, dated March 22, 1887.
Application filed February I0, 1887. Serial No. 227,11. (No model.)
To (ZZZ wit/mt it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Tippet, Muff, and Chest-Protector, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tippet for protecting the neck and a muff protecting the hands anda shield or protector for the chest, combined together and constructed in such a manner that the tippet, muff, and chest-shield are formed from the same strip or piece of fur or other material employed; or, in other words, the tippet, mud, and chest-shield are integral with respect to each other, being formed in and of the same continuous piece or strip of fur.
The invention and the manner in which the same is carried out are fully explained in the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l isa representation of an inside view of the single strip or piece of fur from which my improvement is constructed, the figure showing the tippet formed at one end of the strip. Fig. 2 is an inside view in perspective of the invention, the muff being shown as well as the tippet and theinterinediate chest-shield.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invent-ion I cut outa strip of fur or other material suitable for muffs and tippets to a width equal to the length to be given to the muff and of a length which will allow of the formation thereon of the proposed tippct, muff, and intermediate chest-shield.
Fig. 1 represents a strip of fur cut out to the desired width, the lower end, A, where the niuffis to be forincd, heing cut with straight sides and end, and the upper end, B, where the tippet is to be formed, being cut in curved or ornamental lines, which also extend down to the part 0, where the chest-shield is located. In part B is provided an opening, D, of suitable shape and dimensions to fit around the neck of the wearer, and from the lower part of said opening D, at one side, there is a lateral slit, E, which extends from the opening D through the fur or material to its edge, thereby forming a flap, F, on the side of the tippet, which is fastened to and loosened from the bod of the ti ppet at pleasure by means of loopandbutton fastening G, or other suitable device. The lower end, A, of the strip is bent up, as shown in Fig. 2, into cylindrical or muff form, and its edge is securely fastened by sewing or other suitable fastening to the body of the strip along theline H, thereby forming from the lower end of the strip a muff, I.
The inner surface of thestrip of fur or other material is suitably and properly lined and the edges properly finished according to the taste of the manufacturer. The ti ppet, muff, and chestshield can each be ornamented in any proper manner.
My invention provides a tippet to surround and protect the throat and neck, a shield for.
the chest, and a muff for the hands, all con structed from a single strip or piece of fur or other material, each part being integral with the other.
In putting the garment on the person, the flap F is uni'astened, to allow the tippct to be placed around the neck, and the flap is then again fastened-by the fastening G.
The article is made of different sizes and dimensions, as required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tippet, muff, and chest-protector consisting of a strip of suitable material rolled at its lower end into a cylindrical muff, A, and at its upper end provided with the tippet B, having the opening I), the lateral slit E, extending from the edge to the opening in the tippet, the flap F at the side of the latter, and a fastening device, G, for attaching the flap to the body of the tippet, substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
