"JOHN HOT! AND GEORGE 'I'. HOTT, OF PABSAIC, NEW JERSEY. BADIATOBrSUPPORT.
meome.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it own that we, JOHN Mo'rr and Gmonen Mm'r, citizens of the United e 'iding at the citv of Passaic, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiator-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in supporting 'brackets for radiators and the like and the object of our invention is to provide in a more eflicient and satisfactory manner than heretofore, a bracket or hanger for the purpose of supporting radiators and the like inwhich expansion and contraction While we have occurs in a firm and secure position.
We accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same,
, ig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. with a radiator in position,
ig. 4 is a View of an optional modification of the foot plate and adjacent parts,
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 7 is a section of the device on the line H in Fig. 2,
Fig. 8 is a view of our optional foot plate. and Fig. 9 is a view of the spacing plate.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the forms of radiator supports at present in use. the radiator is supported below the center of gravity which gives an unstable support easily jarred out of position and has many other defects which we overcome in our present device.
ur device is supported by a channel is dapted to be secured to the wall of a building or the like by a bolt, screw or the like B, for which purpose we prefer to provide a plurality of bolt apertures B, to the end that the supporting bolt may be adjusted to any suitable joint, seam or other joint of support in the wall. This plate I is provided with apertured bent over end sections f and f and carries a sliding plate 2 which is provided at its upper end section with a cross head H, and is slidably secured upon the plate I by a bolt 3, which is inserted through the bent over end sections f and f of the plate I and passes Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 27, 1917. Serial No. 209,050.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
througHh suitable bolt apertures in the cross head to the plate with internal screw threads or with a screw threaded nut to receive the screw threaded end section of the bolt Zlywhereby the vertical adjustment of th plate 2 is obtained.
he cross head His provided in its upper face with a longitudinal groove H havmg buffers or stops D at each end and in the center, and supports a horizontal bar 5 carried by a rail G which preferably rests u on. roller or ball bearings l? in the groove lli, he horizontal bar 5 carries at each end upstanding ears 6 upon which are supported 6', having laterally slotted sections K; shown the device provided with two supporting ears 6 we do not intend to thus limit ourselves as it is apparent that a single ear 6 centrally located on a plurality of ears suitably spaced will be equally operative.
A radiatonA or the like is mounted on our improved bracket by resting its cross tube or bar A upon the arms 6', which may be made to conform to any type of radiator and which may be adjusted laterally, the bolts 6" are then tightened up to hold the radiator securely in position by the wedge effect of the spacing plate 4 which bears against the lower section of the radiator A and is provided with lugs c c of sufficient width. and bearing on the wall or other support to prevent the radiator from rocking or swinging. The arm 6' which is preferably provided on the ear 6 elevates the radiator to a position where it conceals the bracket support from view. The radiator A is thus firmly supported from points above the center of gravity with the bracket or hanger concealed from view and the lateral contraction and expansion is permitted by means of the slidable bearing of the grooved supporting rail 5 on the cross head H. The rail 5 is preferably provided with a projecting overhang 5 to add strength and to protect the groove H from foreign matter and dirt.
The device may be provided further with the clamping lock shown in Figs. 5 and 6, which comprises a wedge R which may be adapted to fit any type or shape of radiator, to engage the sections thereof and carries an arm R which is adapted to bear against [the flange E of the cross head H and a hook bolt S inserted through a bolt open 4 which is provided H fit ture in the wedge R engages the rail 5 and may be locked in position by means of a nut S.
Where it is desired to support more than a single tier of radiators we extend the bolt 8 the required length and provide thereon a pc or sleeve P and a foot plate 8 as shown in Figs. 4 and 8.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is: e
1. In a radiator snpport, a plate adapted to be attached to a wall, a plate slidable vertically thereon, a cross head, a rail there on and means carried by said rail for supporting a radiator above its center of a gravity.
2. In a radiator support the combination of a plate adapted to be attached to a wall, a cross head, a rail thereon and means carried by said rail for supporting a radiator above its center of gravity.
3. A radiator support comprising a cross head adapted to support a radiator at a plurality of points in a substantially horizontal line above the center of gravity, a bearing to permit expansion and contraction in the radiator, a spacing plate adjacent the base 'of the radiator to prevent the same from rocking, andconnecting means between the cross head and the spacing plate.
4. In a radiator sup ort, the combination of a back plate, a p ate slidable thereon, connecting means therebetween, a cross head, a rail thereon, ears on said rail ai'ld means for clamping said ears to a radiator.
In testimony whereof, We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
