EMERGENCY COUPLING-LINK.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
Application filed February 14,1918. Serial in. 217,168. a
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, HARRY B. JAoxsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
' siding at Sharpsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emergency Coupling Links, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to emergency coupling links and has for its object to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a link capable of being quickly and conveniently positioned to couple together the lengths of a broken tread chain across a tire, to enable the further use of the chain, and to overcome the possibility of the broken lengths injuring the tire, and also the necessity of discarding the broken lengths under such conditions providing a saving in expense.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a link for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efiicient in its use, readily attached in position, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modificationscan beresortedto whichcome within the scope of the claim hereunto-appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a portion 3 which terminates in a pair of arcuate end portions 4, 5, the latter being materially smaller than the former. The end 4, terminates in a stem 6, which is disposed at an inclination and priorto the closing of the link is disposedat an acute-angle, but when the link is closed extends at an'obtuseangle.
The end 5, terminates in an inclined stem .7, which is of greater length than the stem 6, and which extends at an actute-angle. when the link is open, or when the link is closed,
the' angle being greater when the link is closed.
d When the link is closed, that sideof the link opposite "the side 3, and which is indicated at 8, is disposed at an inclination with respect to the side 3, and isformed by the stems 6, 7, but said side 8 is interrupted, due
to the fact that the stems 6, 7, do not abut.
When the side 8, is formed by the stemstl, 7, the ends of these latter oppose each other.
The length of the stem 7, with respect to the length of the stem 6, is such that when the side 8, is formed the stem 7, does not overlap thestem 6:
The coupling-link when open can be conveniently positioned due to the inclined stems 6, 7 with respect to the links of the lengths of the broken chains, and the stems can be bent so as to close the coupling-link, whereby the lengths will be connected'together and the tread chain utilized for the purpose for which it is intended.
What I claim-is: 1
An emergency couplinglink for the lengths of a broken tire tread chain consisting of an uninterrupted side having its termlni mergin into a pair of arcuate end portions, one 0 said end portions being mate rially larger than the other, said end portions facing each other, an inclined stem extending in the same plane throughout and an inclined stem projecting from the smaller end portion, and of greater length than the projecting from said larger end portion and 7 other stem and extending in the same plane throughout, said inclined stems forming the other side' of the link.
In testimony whereof I aiiix' my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY B. JACKSON. Witnesses: MAX H. SRoLovnz, LUELLA H. SIMON.
