Be it known that I, MAX EHRENFELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in cud-Links, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in links for connecting buttons, the same being designed for use in connection with ends or bands on shirt sleeves, particularly of the non-starched or non-stiffened variety now in common use, and for other analogous uses and purposes for which it may be adapted.

A main object of the invention is the provision of a cuff link of simple, efficient and durable construction, and one with which buttons, differing either in size or shape, may be employed, it being the purpose to fashion and arrange the parts in such manner that the buttons may be readily attached to or secured on the link and as readily removed therefrom.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide an elongated link having, as a novel feature of improvement, a pivoted side, which, when moved into open position, will permit either the application or removal of the buttons, and which, when moved into closed position, will serve as means for keeping the buttons separated, with one operatively held or maintained at each end of the link.

A further object is to provide in cooperation both with the link and the pivoted or movable side, meanswhereby thelatter may be maintained either in open or closed position.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following description, and the invention will be particularly defined in the claims hereto appended.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 7 represents in general a onepiece elongated link, made from gold or silver or any suitable alloy thereof, or of any suitable material plated with gold or silver. This link is of the same thickness throughout and has its opposite ends curved or bowed in plan toward each other as shown at 8 and 9, the curves being precisely alike and the extent thereof being somewhat greater than a semi-circle. The free ends 10 and 11, respectively, of the curves or bows 8 and 9 project toward each other in plan, and the same are reduced on opposite sides so as to fit snugly between the side plates 12 and 13 of the U-shaped member 14, the extent of such reductions being substantially equivalent to the thickness of said side plates, so that the outer surfaces of the side plates will come even with the outer surfaces of the bows and as well with the connecting straight portion 15. 16 is a rivet or pivot which extends transversely through the side plates 12 and 13 and also through the reduced end 10, whereby pivotally to connect the U-shaped member 1 1 with the curved or bowed portion 8. The opposite ends of said side plates are preferably curved toward each other as at 17, and these plates are of such width that they meet the straight portion 15 when the U-shaped member is closed as shown in Fig. 2.

In order to maintain the U-shaped member either in closed position as shown in Fig. 2, or in open position as shown in Fig. 3, I provide a cam-like device or catch 18, disposed between the side plates 12 and 13, and held in position by a rivet extending through a half eye 20, provided on the in ner edge 21, adjacent the end remote from the pivot 16. Adjacent the pivot 16, the catch 18 is made with a pointed or cam portion 22 having on its outer side a straight edge 23, designed to engage and work on the end and inner side of the reduced portion 10. Under this arrangement, the U- shaped member 1% may be readily moved from closed position to open position or from open position to closed position, and will be maintained in either position through the cooperation of the cam portion 22 with the reduced portion 10.

24 and 25 represent buttons, provided each with aneyed shank 26, whereby to be swung on the link 7, the buttons being of the link, can be exchanged either for larger or smaller buttons as may be necessarybest to meet conditions in respect of the size'of the button-holes or of other adaptations of use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The herein described cuff link comprising an elongated link having a straight portion connecting bowed portions terminating in reduced ends projecting toward each other in plan, a U-shaped member pivotally engaged with one reduced end and of a length to reach and engage the other reduced end and of a width to meet the straight portion, and means arranged in the U-shaped member and adapted to cooperate with the reduced end containing the pivot whereby to maintain the U-shaped member either in open or closed position.

2. The herein described cuff link comprising a one-piece elongated link of the same thickness throughout and having a straight portion connecting bowed portions terminating in reduced ends projecting toward each other in plan, a U-shaped member pivotally engaged with one reduced end and of a length to reach and engage the other reduced end and of a width to meet the straight portion, said U-shaped member being of the same thickness as said link, and

a cam device disposed in the Ushaped member and adapted to cooperate with the reduced end containing the pivot whereby to maintain the U-shaped member either in open or closed position.

In a cufl link, the combination with a one-piece link having a straight portion connecting two outwardly bowed portions terminating in reduced ends that project toward each other, or"- a Ushaped member pivotally engaged with one of the reduced ends and of a length to'reach and engage the other reduced end and of a width to meet the straight portion, and means arranged in the U-shaped member and adapted to cooperate with the reduced end containing the pivot whereby to maintain the U-shaped member either in open or closed position.

In a cuff link, the combination with a one-piece link having a straight portion connecting two outwardly bowed portions terminating in reduced ends projecting toward each other in plan, of a U-shaped member pivotally engaged with one of the reduced-ends and of a length to reach and engage the other reduced end and of a width to meet the straight portion, a rivet connecting the sides of the U-shaped memher, and a plate disposed in the U-shaped member and having a half eye fitting on said rivet, said plate having a'cam projection designed to cooperate with the reduced end containing the pivot whereby to maintain'the U-shaped member either in open or closed position.

5. In a cuff link, the combination with a one-piece link having a straight portion connecting two outwardly bowed portions terminating in reduced ends that project toward each other in plan, of a U-shaped member pivotally engaged with one of the reduced ends and of a length to reach and engage the other reduced end and of awidth to meet the straight portion, a button swung on each outwardly bowed portion, and means arranged in the U-shaped member and adapted to coiiperate with the reduced end containing the pivot whereby to maintain the U-shaped member either in open or closed position, said U-shaped member when closed serving as means for keeping the buttons separated.
