Description
(No Model v A. T. MASON.
' CUFF LINK.
No, 469,885. I Patented Mar, 1,'1892.
WIU/ESSES, W03.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED T. MASON, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
CUFF-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,885, dated March 1, 1892.
' Application filed September 28,1891. Serial No. 497,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED THOMAS MASON, a citizen of Hereford, England, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Sleeve or Cufi Links; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
Figure l is a side elevation of a device Well calculated to carry out the spirit of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same device.
This invention relates to sleeve or cuff links of that class employing two buttons or studs adapted to be removably connected together; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character employing, in combination with detachable link-couplings, means for permanently securing the buttons or studs together.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of an ordinary cuff, and B the buttons or ornaments of the links, which are provided with the usual stems or shanks b and 11 In the device shown a bar or strip of metal C is pivoted to each of the buttons, as shown at a. To the outer end of the shank b is pivoted the bar d. A lug or stud h projects from the end of the bar 01 in a lateral direction, as shown at O. A bar 71 is pivoted to the shank 12 as shown at 'K. The bar H is provided with a longitudinal slot T, said slot being provided with an enlargement near the pivot end of the bar H, as shown at L.
The operation of the device. is as follows: The sleeve or cuff is looped so that the button-holes or eyelets register with each other, and the ,bar H is then passed through both button-holes until the slot T and enlargement L has passed entirely through the fabric. The
head of the stud or lug h is then passed through the enlargement L and drawn to the extreme opposite end of the slot T. Then release the c'uff, when, by reason of its spring,it will assume the position shown in Fig. 1. To remove the link, the operation is reversed.
It is obvious that any of the well-known means of fastening may be used in combination with the outside connection; also, as will readily be seen,a chain may be used in place of the link' or bar shown at C, and I prefer to use a chain for this purpose, a link or bar being shown for ease of illustration.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a pair of buttons or studs provided each with a link, one of the latter carrying a headed stud and the other having a longitudinal slot terminating at its inner end in an enlargement for receiving said stud, of a coupling permanently connecting the buttons or studs together and located outside the sleeve or cuff, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a cuff or sleeve fastening consisting of a pair of buttons or studs, a bar pivotally and permanently secured thereto and adapted to be located outside the cuff or sleeve, and links pivoted to the respective buttons or studs and adapted to be located inside the cuff or sleeve, one of said links being provided with a longitudinal slot terminating at its inner end in an enlargement and the other link with a stud having a head adapted to be received by said enlargement, but of greater diameter than the slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED T. MASON. \Vitnesses:
H. S. PULLMAN, WM. H. SToRMs.
