Be it known that I, EMIL FISCHER, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Uppers for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shoes, more particularly to an improvement in the art of producing uppers for shoes; and the main objects of the same are :to produce complete uppers for shoes out of single pieces I or blanks of material; to produce in a similar manner uppers for shoes which are neat and attractive in appearance, and which are comfortable and durable in service; to

provide in a similar manner uppers for' shoes having parts so arranged that the work of assembly is reduced to a minimum, and may be performed successfully by those who have had but little training in the trade of shoe making. a

With these objects and others in view,'my

invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a shoe embodying my improved uppers. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved uppers for shoes, the view representing the same as they appear when out from a single piece or blank of material.

I am aware that hitherto uppers for shoes have been produced or cut from a single piece or blank of material, but the methods of producing the same, due to the cut or pattern of the various parts, entails considerable work and skill in their proper assembly; and frequently, also, in order that the shoes produced therefrom may be maintained comfortably upon the foot of the wearer, additional parts, straps or lugs must be added by sewing, riveting or otherwise securing them to the main body of the uppers. I have, therefore, conceived the idea of so cutting or producing the complete uppers from a slngle piece of material that no additional parts, straps or lugs need to be added in order to produce comfortable enduring uppers, except the usual fastening means such as buckles, buttons, or the like.

With more particular reference to the accompanying drawings, I take a single piece of material such as prepared leather,

prepared canvas, or other material suitable for the purpose and cut therefrom by hand or machine, a form of uppers comprising a toe portion 5 which merges into confronting'side portions 6 and 7.

The outer ends or edges of the said portions 5, 6 and 7 may be of any desirable form or configuration in accordance with the size, type or style of shoe which is to be produced. The toe portion 5 is provided on its inner end or edge with a tongue 8 which may be of any desirable length, and which near the top end thereof is provided with parallel cuts or slits 9 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.

Theside portion 6 is formed on its inner edge with the straps 10 and 11, which are spaced-apart in accordance with the height of the shoe for which they are to be employed, the said strap 11 being considerably longer than the said strap 10, because it is required to extend across a higher portion of the instep or ankle. The side 7 is also formed on its inner edge with the flaps or lugs 12 and 13. These flaps are formed in a position approximately opposite the respective points to which the straps 10 and 11 are formed with the side 6. The toe portion 5, as well as the side portions 6 and 7, may be formed with any suitable arrangement or configuration of eyes as 14, or other embellishing designs, which may add to the appearance of the uppers.

In the uppers, thus cut out, it will be observed that the inner edges of the side portions 6 and 7 converge generally from the inner edge of the toe portion to the remote edges or heels 15 and 16, respectively, although the spaces 17 and 18, located, respectively, between the tongue portion 8 and the strap 10, and between the latter and the strap 11 approach approximately more nearly to the outer edge of the side portion, in order to compensate suitably and comfortably for the enlarged portion of the foot. Also, it will be observed that the inner converging edges of the side portions 6 and 7 at the rear of strap 11 and flap 13, serve to provide rearwardly widening side portions, which, when united by sewing or otherwise at the rear ends 15 and 16, comprise the heel portion of the uppers for encompassing the heel of the wearer as shown in Fig. 1.
