Improvement i-n Combined BottleeCase. l
No. 128,940.` Patenfeamjuly 15,1812.
UNITED VSTATES GEORGE W. BANKER AND GEORGE W. PEox, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT |N con/'lemen BOTTLES AND CASES.
Specoation forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,94, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it 'may concern: t
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. BANKER and GEORGE W. PECL-both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Fluid- Holding Bottle or Can and Packing-Case, of which the .following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part thereof.
Figure lis an external perspective View of our combined Vbottle or can and packing-case. Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of the same.
Our invention consists in combining a iluidholding bottle, can, or other vessel in which the neck rises from the centerof the vessel with the interior of a packing-case, which is so constructed that the contehts of the bottle,
can, or vessel may be poured from the nozzle thereof with entire convenience, and Without the liability of the uid being discharged in any other manner or direction than the one intended, and also so that the bottle, case, or vessel may be filled or emptied Without removing it from the case.
A is a bottle or other vessel, which may be Vof either glass or metal, arranged within a packing-case. B and-B are the sides of the case, as shownvin the drawing, D being the top or head, and E the bottom thereof. The
side B is beveled or cut inward toward the neck of the bottle, as shown at C, so as to bring the side'B so nearly in contact with the neck and nozzle of the bottle that the fluid may be poured from the nozzle over the side without spilling. G G is a support or partition in the case, which fits closely around the neck of the bottle, and, being fastened intothe sides of the case, holds the bottle rmly in its place. The case is out away at H, as shown in the drawing, exposing the nozzle of the bottle. I is a hinged metal guard for closing the opening H,pivoted ato, and so constructed and arranged that when it is desired to discharge the contents of the bottleit may be pushed around and back upon its pivot a and lie `hat upon the top of the case, entirely out of the way,as shown in the drawing. To close the opening H the guard I is swung aroundv and forward upon its pivot, and the hinged portion falling over, but not in direct contact With the nozzle of the bottle, as shown by the dotted lines in Figfl, may be locked or otherwise fastened down upon the side of the case. K K are handles secured upon the top and rear side of the case to enable the same to be conveniently lifted and operated when it is desired to discharge the contents of the bottle.
In constructing our combined bottle and packing case proceed 'as follows: First, join together the sides and head of the case, cut of the proper size, and of the form shown in the drawing, the siderB and its corresponding side being beveled or cut inward toward the neck of the bottle, as shown at C, and the openingH being formed of suitable cuts in the side B and the head-piece D. It is preferable to forni the nozzle of the bottle with a lip, at least in the side toward the side B of the case, as shown in the drawing, and the out in the side B should be made to conform to such lip.A This form and arrangement of the parts admits of the lip being extended over the edge of the side B at the bottom of the out, so as to insure the discharge of the iiuid without spilling, and at the same time to admit of the guard I, when locked in position, y
completely inclosing the nozzle without being in contact therewith. The case should be made of such thickness, of wood or other suitable material, as Will best correspond with thesize and weight of the bottle or other vessel to be contained or packed therein. The support or partition G Gr, with an opening of such dimensions and form cut therein as will it snugly around the neck of the bottle or vessel, is then fastened within the case, as shown in Fig. 2. rBhe bottle or vessel is then introduced into the case through the open bottom,
its neck passing through the opening in the support Gr Gr. The bottom E is then inserted and fastened securely to the sides Of the case. The bottom E, by being inserted between the sides of the case, .instead of being fastened upon the ends thereof, admits of it being fitted closely up to the base of the bottle or vessel and holding it firmly in place. By making the guard I in two parts, hinged together, as shown in the drawing, it is adapted to cover the opening for the nozzle in the top and side of the case, while, when swung away so as to expose the opening, the two parts are allowed to fall together and lie/hat upon the top, and thus be entirely out of the 'way While pouring from the case.
l fl
By forming the packing case with one side .beveled inward toward the neck ofthe bottle so as to bring such side near the top nearly in contact with the neck of the bottle,'and providing an opening in the top and front side of the case, as shown and described, itis evident that bottles or other Vessels in which the neck rises from the center of the body of the ves sel may be as conveniently emptied of their contents and again lled Without the liability of spilling` or failing to discharge the uid clear from the case as though the neck rose from one side of the vessel in a square case of the ordinary form, and, as is well known, the making of glass-bottles with the neck on one side is inconvenient, and when made of any other material it is preferable and common to place the neck in the center.
Vhat We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the bottle or can A with the packing-case B', made and combined substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with a combined packing-case and bottle or can, as first above claimed, of the pivoted hinged guard I, constructed, arranged, and operating` substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
3. The bottle or can A, the packing-case B, the guard I, and the handles K K', all constructed, combined, and operating substantially as described.
