JACOB SKLAR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed February 6, 1918. Serial N 0. 215,630.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcoB SKLAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sash fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character coacting with the meeting rails of a sash and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character including a cam lock and an operating lever therefor together with a keeper coacting with the cam lock and wherein novel and improved means are provided for holding the cam lock normally against rotary movement and wherein such means afiords a medium whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the cam look when pull is imposed upon said locking means to release the same.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved sash fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
F ignre 1 is a view in perspective of a sash fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the locking bolt for holding the cam lock normally against rotation.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings P denotes a plate suitably secured to the upper surface of the meeting rail of a lower sash and which has rotatably mounted thereon the cam lock C. Coacting with the cam lock C is a keeper K suitably secured to the upper surface of the meeting rail R of the upper sash.
Extending outwardly from the cam lock C is the operating lever L. The upper marginal portion of the lever L is provided with the outwardly directed flange 1 provided with the opening or slot Q'through which is directed the upper end portion of the bolt B. The bolt B as herein disclosed is mounted for vertical movement or movement in a direction transversely of the lever L. The upper end portion of the bolt B is bent to afford the forwardly directed flange piece 3 while the lower end portion of said bolt B coacts with the ratchet teeth 4: arranged in an arcuately disposed series concentric to the rotating axis of the cam lock C.
The bolt B at substantially midway its length is offset to afford an upwardly facing shoulder 5 with which engages the free end portion of the leaf spring 6. The opposite end portion of the spring 6 is suitably anchored as at 7 to the under face of the flange 1. The spring 7 constantly urges the bolt B in a direction toward the plate P so that the bolt B will properly coact with the teeth 1 to hold the cam lock C against outward movement. The bevel of the teeth 4 is such as to readily permit inwardly swinging movement of the lever L when it is desired to lock the upper and lower sashes.
I also find it of advantage to have the lower portion of the bolt B slidably disposed through the guide 8 herein disclosed as a metallic strap anchored at its extremities to the outer face of the lever L.
In operation it will be self-evident that when pull is imposed upon the finger piece 3 to disengage the bolt B from the teeth t the resulting strain will also serve to impart the requisite outward swinging movement to the lever L so that by a single operation the cam lock C may be swung free of the keeper K.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a sash fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim;
A Window fastener including a plate having a series of ratchet teeth a rotatable cam lock carried by the plate and having an extended arm, said arni being provided with a flange overlying the plate and spaced distance therefrom, said flange having an opening, a lock bolt carried by the arm and movable in a plane substantially at right angles tovthe plate one end portion of the bolt extending through the opening in the flange, the opposite end portion being engageable with the ratchet teeth, the portion of the bolt beyond the flange being for- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing-the Commissioner of Patents,
Wardly directed to form a finger piece for 15 and the shoulder for constantly urging the 20' bolt toward the plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
