2b all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN` SaMrson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of
which the4 following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes driers of that type which is adapted for use in back yards.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a drier in which the clothes line may be raised or lowered at the will of the operator and automatically held against further n'ioveinentwhen adjusted in any position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of spaced standards and carriers for 'the clothes line respectively7 mounted on said standards for vertical movements there-along, and operating means for the carriers mounted on one of the standards and provided with a detachable operating handle, whereby unauthorized persons will, when the handle is removed, be unable to shift said carriers.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a standard and a clothes-line carrier movably mounted thereon and provided with rollers which engage tracks on opposite sides of the standard, whereby said carrier may be raised and lowered with a minimum amount of friction. and also held against lateral movement.
These and other object-s will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the accompanying dra-wings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invent-ion,
Figurel is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation showing a carrier mounted on its supporting standard;
Fig. t is an end elevation 'of the operating means, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof, the cover plate being removed to disclose the mechanism contained therein.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawings. 1
Referring specifically to the construction shown, I have provided a pair of spaced bedded in the ground.
standards 5 and 6 which are preferablyv em- .Fixedly secured to the opposite sides of each standard is a pair of vertically disposed tracks 7 7, which, in this instance, are each formed from channel iron. Associated with each standard and with each pair lof tracks is a carrier which is designated by the reference letter A. p
Each carrier comprises a spaced pair of vertical arms 8 and 9 of angle iron, which are connected by upper and lower arms 10 and 11 respectively. The ends of the arms 10 and 11, which connect with the arm 9, are preferably ixed thereto by rivets 12 or the like. The opposite ends of the arms 10 and 11 are connected with the vertical arm 8 by bolts 1?, which respectively pass through suitable slots in the arm 8 to permit said vertical arms S and 9 being adj usted toward or from each other for a limited extent. Extending rearwardly from.
the upper and lower ends of each vertical arm 8 and 9 are short arms 14 and 15. each arm carrying a roller 16. It will thus be seen that each carrier includes four rollers which engage the tracks 7, two rollers engaging each of said tracks. Supported b v each carrier is a horizontallydisposed rod 17 which carries al plurality of fastening devices 18, such as hooks or the like, to which one or more clothes-lines 19 may be attached.
It will thus be seen that each carrier A may be moved up and down along the corresponding tracks 7. These tracks are preferably disposed at the upper portion of the standards, and in order to limit the eXtreme movements of the carriers, upper and lower stops 19 and 20 respectively are provided. These stops also prevent all danger of the rollers 16 from becoming` derailed.
In order to simultaneously raise and lower the carriers, I have provided an operating means which includes a drum 21. This drum is supported for rotation between two bracket arms 22 and 23, which are respectively secured to opposite sides of the standard 5 at a point between the base of the standard and the lower end of the tracks carried thereby.-
Two cables 24 and 25 respectively are each connected at one end of the drum 21, and these cables extend upwardly alongr the standard 5. thence over a pulley 26 which is supported `by a bracket at the upper end of the standard 5.
the standard 5, thence through a suitable opening in the standard, and thence over a second pulley 27 which is also carried by a bracket mounted at the upper end of said standard. The cable 24 then continues downwarly and is connected to a hook 28 which isv carried by the upperhorizontal arm l0 ofthe carrier A which is supported on The hook 28 is centrally disposed relative to the standard and carrier. The other cable 25 extends across and over a pulley 29 carried by a bracket mounted on the upper end of the standard 6. This cable 25 thence extends downwardly to the carrier A mounted on the standard 6 and is attached to said carrier by a hook similar to the hook 28 above described.
It vwill thus be observed that if the drum 21 be rotated, the cables 24 and 25 will simultaneously raise the carriers A, or permit said carriers to be simultaneously lowered.
In order to automatically hold the carriers in any adjusted position, I have provided the operating mechanism with a star wheel 30, or its equivalent, said wheel being fixedly connected to the drum 21 to rotate therewith. The bracket arm 23 is provided at one end with a casing 3l, and this casing not only covers the star wheel 30, but also forms a support and covering for a worm 32, which lmeshes with said star wheel. This casing is suitably covered by a cover plate 33. Projecting axially from one end of the worm is an angular shaft 34:, to which a hand,
wrench 35 may be. attached. By means of the Wrench the wor-m 32 may be readily turned in either direction so as to rotate the star wheel 30, and thereby act on the cables 24 and 25, to raise or lower the carriers. It will 'be noted that when the carriers have been adjusted in any desired position, the
star wheel 30 will coperate with the thread' of the worm 32 to lock the drum against further rotation. By providing the detachable handle 35, the handle may be removed after the carriers have been adjusted, and in this manner prevent unauthorized persons from raising or lowering the carriers. By
providing the lateral adjustment between the vertical arms 8 and 9 of each carrier, each carrier may be readily adjusted to standards which may vary in width within certain limits.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimis l. In a clothes drier, the combination with a single fixed post, of vertically disposed tracks extendingv along the 'opposite side faces of said post, and a vertically movable clothes line vcarrier disposed in front of said post and having rearwardly extending arms arranged on opposite sides thereof,A said arms having interfitting connections with said tracks whereby said carrierwill be retained against lateral movements relative to said tracks and post.
2. In a clothes drier, the combination with a standard, of a vertically movable clothes line carrier having spaced parts interfitting with opposite faces of said standard whereby said carrier will be retained against lateral movements, said spaced parts being connected for lateral adjustment to accomodate standards of diii'erent sizes.y
3. In a clothes drier, the combination with a standard, of vertically disposed channel tracks secured to the opposite faces of said standard, and a clothes-line carrier mounted on said standard for vertical movement thereon, said carrier including spaced pairs of upper and lower rollers respectively engaging in said channel tracks, said pairs of rollers being supported on the carrier for relative lateral adjustments to accommodate said carrier to standards of different sizes.
4. In a clothes drier, a clothes line carrier comprising a frame including laterally ad- Y Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
