Description

UNITED STATES ALBERT N. MARSDEN, OF TRENTON, MISSOURI.
. IRONING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16,1906.
Application filed December 6, 1905. Serial No. 290,601.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. lVlARSDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing-boards particularly adapted for use in laundries, the object being to rotatably mount on a center support or standard a plurality of boards of different sizes for convenience in ironing various articles, the boards being so mounted that the ones not in use may be swung downward out of the way.
I will describe an ironing-board embodying my invention and then point out the features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the fig- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ironing-board embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, partly broken away and in section. Fig. 3 is a plan of the rotary head or carrier employed, and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing the means for holding the boards in position for use.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a standard, which may be suitably secured to a floor, and at the upper end of the standard is a spindle 2, on which a board-carrier 3 is mounted to rotate. This carrier rests upon a shoulder at the base of the spindle and also rests upon a bracket 4, formed integral with the standard. The carrier has a plurality of pairs of outwardly-extended arms 5, between which the ironing-boards 6 are designed to swing. As here shown, the inner ends of the boards are mounted on rods 7, which pass through the arms. The pairs of arms are variously spaced apart to receive the various widths of boards used for different purposes.
On the upper end of the spindle 2 is a table 8, having an opening for receiving a pan 9 for containing water or damp articles. Also on this table is a holder 10, on which the irons may be heated, a suitable heater of course being arranged within the device 10.
As a means for holding the board in eX- tended or operative position I employ a shaft 11, having a threaded portion engaging in a tapped hole in a web 12 on the under side of the table 8, and the lower end of this screwrod is designed to engage with the inn er end ofa board inward of its pivotal point, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. For the purpose of turning the screw-rod it is provided with a hand-wheel 13. Each board at its inner end is provided with ametal plate 14, with which the lower end of the holding device engages.
The operation of the device is quite obvious-that is, when any particular board is desired for use it is swung upward to practically horizontal position and the head is turned with the several boards to move the horizontal board underneath the screw-rod 11, which is then moved downward to engage with the inner end of said. board, as before mentioned. To prevent lateral movement.
of a board when in use, it is provided with a tapered pin 15 for engaging in a hole formed in the bracket 4.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a standard, a spindle on the upper end of the standard, a carrier mounted to rotate on said spindle and having a plurality of outwardly-extended arms, a board having swinging connection with each pair of arms, and a screw-rod for engaging with the inner end of a board, to hold it in horizontal position.
2. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a standard, a carrier mounted to ro-' tate on said standard, a plurality of boards of varying sizes having swinging connection with the carrier, a fixed table arranged above the carrier, and a screw-rod engaged with the table and adapted to engage its lower end with a board, to hold the same in horizontal position.
3. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a standard, a carrier mounted to rotate on the standard, boards of varying Widths having swinging connection with the carrier, a fixed table on the standard above the carrier, and having an opening, and a de-;
vice having connection with the table, for holding a board in operative position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT N. MARSDEN.
