CUT-OUT iaox.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
Application filed May 3, 1916. Serial No. 95,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS M. HAUER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Out Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which is appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as cut-out boxes, junction boxes and like devices for use in the electric wiring of buildings, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive and convenient of manipulation, and which may be used wherever devices of this class are required.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved junction box and showing the same closed; and,
Fig. 2 a similar view showing it open.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a box of the class specified, comprising a main body part a having a cover 6, and the main body part a is oblong and rectangular in form and is made of sheet metal and comprises a bottom portion a two similar side members a and two end members a and a The entire body part a is cut from sheet metal, andthe sides and ends are folded, as shown, and the end portion (1* is provided with side flanges a which fit within the side members a and the end portion a is also provided with side flanges a which fit within the side members a and this reinforces the main body portion of the box.
The side members a of the body portion of the box are provided adjacent to the end member a with parallel projecting flanges a and to which the cover I) is hinged, and said cover comprises a main body or back 6 side members?) and end members b and b and the end member 12 is formed from the main body or backportion 6 as shown,
her a of the body by bending said main body or back portion inwardly and the side members 6 project to form parallel jaws b which overlap the projecting end flanges a of the sides of the body portion of the box, and hinge pins 0 are passed outwardly through the flange members a of the body portion of the box and through the jaws b of the cover and are secured in the jaws b the outer ends thereof being preferably riveted to form heads and also to secure said pins in positlon, and wound on the pins 0 are springs 03 having ends d which bear on the end memportion of the box and other end members (i which are folded or bent over and bear on of the box, as clearly shown in- Fig. 2, and these springs normally operate to hold the cover in the closed position, as shown in Flg. 1, and said cover is preferably provided at its free end with a knob or handle 6 by which it may be conveniently opened, when desired.
The body portion of the box is also provided both in the sides and ends thereof with the usual apertures a having detachable closure devices a, this construction bleing similar to that of other devices of this 0 ass.
' The use of my improved outlet or journal box will 'be similar to that of other devices of its class and the feature of the hinged cover and the method of operating the same will facilitate the use of the device and render such use more eflicient and convenient. It will be observed that when the cover is 1n a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, the side and end members thereof closely fit the corresponding parts of the body por tion of the box, and said box is securely closed and the contents thereof protected, but said box may be easily opened whenever necessary, by simplyswinging the cover I) back into the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent,-is
An outlet box comprising a body portion one end of which is provided with side projecting members and a cover having corresponding side projecting members, hinge pins passed inwardly through the projecting the back of the cover weaves members of the body portion and the cover my invention 1 have signel my name in presand provided with inwardly directed extenence of the subscribing witnesses this 29th sions having heads, and springs wound on day of April, 1916.
the extensions of said pins and the ends of JULIUS M. HAUE-R. 5 which bear on the end of the body portion Witnesses:
of the box and on the back of the cover. (3. E. MULREANY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as H. E. THOMPSON.
