mcHAeD G. TULLER, or MARYLAND, NEW YORK.
Doon-sacrifier..
Specification of Letters Iatent. jPgiteinN-)d 0015. 29, 1918.
Application filed June 17, 1918. Serial No. 240,366.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD G. TULLER, a citizen`2of the United States, residing at Maryland,l in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a newT and Improved Door-Securer, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention has reference to improvements in 'that type of locking devices which may be readily carried upon the person and secured to and detached from a door jamb.
Primarily, my invention has for its ob-v ject to provide a device of t-he character stated, of a simple and veconomical construction, that. is particularly adapted for use by travelers for the )ur ose of tem orar f a plication to the door frame of a room at hotels or other' stopping places, the locks of which are commonly of that type that afford little or no protection against being picked or broken.
Another object of my invention is to provideA a device;of the type stated, in which the looking elements are so arranged that the device maybe readily applied and secured to a right or left hand'opening door and the saidelements readily adjusted for doors of dilferent thicknesses and in which the parts are cooperatively so assembled and are of such strength that when applied, the door cannot be opened without destroying or breaking it `or mutilating the framing.
For a full, clear and complete disclosure of my invention reference is to be had to the following description, the claims, in which the invention is specifically p nted out, and to the drawings, in Which:'
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, so much of a door' and its casing being shown as is necessary to illustrate the operative application of my improved device, the latter being shown adjusted for holding the door closed. A
.F ig. 2 is a similar View, the adjustable locking element'being shown swung out to its longitudinally shiftable position.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 3 3 on Fig. 5.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section thereof on the line 4-4 on. Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a rear face View of the device. j
My improved device consists generally of a body plate 1,' preferably of steel, whose opposite ends are thinnedto facilitate either of such ends for fitting between the door jamb and the door edge and each of the said ends is formed, on the rear facev thereof, with one or more spurs 2, of sufficient length that, when inserted in the lockkeeper on the jamb, they secure or hold the body plate from being pulled or pushed out, when the door is closed, as indicated in Figs. land 3. i f
The central or thickened portion of the `loodyplate 1v has a longitudinal slot 3, the
outwardly extended heel portions '40-40 that constitute stops for engaging with the inside of the door, when adjusted thereagainst, as shown. 4
One edge .of the main portion of the inembert has integral hook-like members 41-41 'that engage the roundededge of the toothed lportion 30. of the body, see Fig. 4, and constitute hinged members that provide for readily swinging the locking elementJ out of the slot 3 and out of the way, when closing the door onto the body 1, is illustrated inFig. 2.
The opposite edges of the member 4 have teeth 42-42 that interlock with the teeth 30a-30b on the body l, when the said member is swung into the locking position and to facilitate the manipulation of the member 4, a turn button 5 is attached thereto and which includes a shank 50 that passes through the said member 4 and carries a latch 51 at the inner end which, when the l button 5 is adjusted as in Figs. 1, 8 and 5, swings over the inner face of the body l and locksthe member 4 against swinging out of itsinterlocked engagement with the said body.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the complete construction, themanner of its application, and the advantages of my device will be readily apparent.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A door securer comprising a body plate i' lng one of its ends adapted to be inserted locking element' adapted to be inserted between two members Vtube locked, one of the said members being scribed, comprising a main body plate havbetween a door and its adjacent jamb and provided with la casing spur adapted vto project into a recess inthe jamb, the said body plate having 'a longitudinal slot form-ed with locking teeth along the oppo-A site edges thereof, a locking element which j includes a body portion insertible into the 'slot 'of the body plate and of lessy length than the said slot, the said locking element 'having llocking teeth along its opposite ledges for interengaging with the teeth on the slot edges, the said bodv portion of the including a stop member adapted to be` projected against the door and -means for holding the locking element in interlooked engagement withl the slotted body.
3.' A locking device of the character described, comprising a main body plate having one of its ends adapted to be inserted between a door and its adjacentjamb and provided with a casing spur adapted to project into a, recess in the jamb, the said body plate having'a longitudinal slot formed with looking teeth along the opposite edges having a spur .adapted to thereof, a locking element which includes the said means consisting of a turn button having a shank .that extends through the locking element and a latch on the inner end of the shank movable over the rear face of the slotted body.
et. `As a new article, a door securer comprising a main or body plate whoseopposite endsare shapedv for being inserted between a door and its jamb, each of-said ends having a spur adapted to project into a recess in the jamb, the central portion ofthe body having an elongated slot whose opposite edges have locking teeth, one of the toothed portions of the Said body having a rounded outer edge and a locking element consisting of a body portion of less length than' that of the slot inthe body plate and having teeth at the opposite edges for interlocking. with the toothed edges of the slotway, said locking element having its ends formed with outwardly projected heel portions that constitute stops for being brought into engagement with the door, said locking element being hingedly mounted on the rounded outer edge of the main or body plate to swing outwardly from the said plate, and means on the said locking element f or,`se curing such locking element to its adjusted positions' on the main or body plate. l
