JOSEPH B. SARGENT.
Improvement in Doo r-Bolts.
Patented June 18, 1872.

IMPROVEMENT m DOOR-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,074, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. SARGENT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Im-' provement in Door-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection I with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1, a front "iew with the bolt drawn; Fig. 2, the same with the bolt thrown out; and in Fig. 3, an end View.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of barrel-bolts commonly termed neck-bolts, in which the fastening end of the bolt is thrown forward out of line with the pulling upon the door from the opposite side.-
The object of this invention is to support the bolt upon the door at its extreme end when thrown out and it consists in forming a guide upon the end of the plate into which the body of the bolt will pass when turned up, and so as to take a bearing around the bolt proper when so thrown into the said guide, or, as it may be termed, the auxiliary barrel.
A is the plate; B, the barrel, within which tends out at right angles, and from this the fastening end of the bolt extends in a line parallel, or nearly so, to the axis of the bolt proper.
Thus far the bolt represents the common construction, the plate not extending much, if any, beyond the end of the barrel; therefore when the bolt is thrown forward, as denoted in Fig. 2, the leverage from the opposite side of the door tending to wrench the bolt from the door is very great.
To strengthen the bolt in this respect I extend the plateforwa-rd, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to attach to the plate forward of the bolt proper a. slotted guide, H H. The arm E is thinner than the diameter of the bolt, so that these guides extend over and take a bearing upon the bolt, as seen'in Fig. 3; thus any strain upon the bolt from the opposite side is brought directly upon these guides, and so greatly increases the strength of the bolt to resist the opening of the door from the opposite side. \Vhen drawn back the arm E falls between the auxiliary guides H and the barrel B, as seen in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention- A neck-bolt having the auxiliary barrel or guides H formed upon the plate forward of the body of the bolt, and so as to receive and support the bolt, substantially as described.
- JOSEPH B. SARGENT.
