GEORG-E N. BROOKS, OF RUSHVILLE, NEBRASKA.
CHIMNEY-SLEEVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918,
Application filed J une 25, 1918. Serial No. 241,785.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE N.
BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rushville, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Sleeves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a chimney sleeve and particularly to a structure adapted for application to a. chimney flue to protect the building joist against fire or other injury by products of combustion passing through the c `mney.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of chimney sleeve comprising telescoping sections each formed at its free end with a securing iiange adapted to be set into the chimney structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide the telescoping sections of the chimney sleeve with perforated flanges to form anchoring means adapted to be embedded in the mortar of the joints of the chimney structure.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim'.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing the application of the sleeve to a chimney.
gig. 2 is a section on line 2`2 of Fig. 1, an
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the sleeve.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates the body of the chimney sleeve which may be formed of any desired material, such as iron, and may be rectangular, as shown, or of other configuration to conform to the size and shape of the chimney to which it is applied. The sleeve members 10 are similar in construction and adapted to be formed of a single piece of material having one end thereof cut and Copies o! this patent may 19e obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the bent outward to provide flanges 11 at the several sides, if the sleeve be of rectangular form. These flanges are adapted to be seated in the mortar joints 12 between the bricks 13 of any desired type of chimney, as indicated at 14.
For the purpose of anchoring in position so as to eiect a they are formed with a series tions 15 adapted to be embedded in the mortar of the joint 12 and thus permanently iiXed within the chimney. The sections of the sleeve are telescoped upon each other and may be extended to any desired extent to thoroughly protect against .lire the point where the building rafters 16 are embedded in the chimney structure.
The application of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description and the sleeves are adapted to be placed in the chimney iiue at any point desired, particularly at the floor and roof levels, and the structure of the sleeve not only protects these points against iire from defective Hues but also the settling and crackin of brick or tile chimneys where the vmaterial thereof comes in contact with wood or other substance which may shrink or change in position owing to settlement of the structure. The sections of construction permit the same to be very economically produced from a single piece of material and to be quickly and readily applied in the construction of the chimney, so as to form an integral part thereof in the completed structure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is An adjustable chimney sleeve comprising telescoping sections, each wall thereof being provided at its free end with an outwardly extending securing flange adapted to be dis posed in a joint of the chimney structure.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE N. BROOKS.
