LOUISrJACIQ. 0F MOYLAN; PENNSYLVANIAi ADJUSTABLE FORM FOR`SMOKECHAMBER CONSTRUCTION' FOR CHIMNEYS HAVING OIE'EN`A FIREPLACES.
Specification of Letters Patenti Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application mea september 15, 1911. serial Ne. 649,588.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS JACK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Moylan, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Form for Smoke-Chamber Construction for Chimneys Having Open Fireplaces, of which the following specifications are a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the said appliance, in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, which form a part of the specifications and also are in demonstration of the mode of applying to use my invention.
The purpose of this appliance is to control and facilitate the constructural form and quality of smoke chambers of chimneys having open tire places.- This important part of chimneys made of masonry usually encounters diiiiculty and. uncertainty in the construction to secure form, size, direction and smoothness in order to effectively discharge into the smoke-flue the fumes arising from the combustion of fuel in open An additional function yof the appliance is to support the masonry of the smoke chamber.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of my smoke chamber former.A Fig. 2, is a perspective detail thereof. Fig. 3, is a detail of an adjustable tie-bar. Fig. 4, is a sectional front elevation of a fire place with an ladjustable smoke chamber former in position therein. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of my smoke chamber former in position. 'F ig. 6, is a detail of a brace with adjusting perforations. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic front view showing my smoke chamber former deflected laterally.
Concerning Fig. l, B. is a rectangular ring made of flat iron, of dimensions equivalent to the cross section of any selected smoke Hue. B. l, are legs of angle iron to sustain ring B., which are attached theret( by screw bolts o, 2, in order to permit ad- .of throat- A. Fig. 5.
`4, is an adjustable tie bar, having perforations to regulatedistance between the feet lof the legs to agree with' the cross dimension Legs b, 1 have like perforations to secure engagement with said bar b, 4, by screw bolts b, 2; b, 5, is an adjustable brace, connected with the distal egs.
The connection of l, with ring B. by means of lip b, 3, and screw bolt b, 2, is shown by Fig. 2, and also the acute angular form of the feet, 1; this mode of connection provides adjustment to place ring B. in apposition with the smoke-flue C.
The placement of legs Z), 1, seated in recess 7J, 6, with their triangular spread in accordance with the width of the fire place, and their connection with B. in relation with smoke-flue C. is seen by Fig. 4 which also shows that D. l, is the perpendicular wall of pocket D; end of brace b, 4; plate P. and horizontal line of throat A; Fig.4also shows at one side the masonry arrangement to secure smoothness. y
Fig. 5, shows the apparatus, (former) placed in linewith throat A; the terra cotta iiue C. and shows the backward inclination usually required; the hinge like arrangement of lip `b, 3, permitting movement to secure adjustment to any position assigned for the smoke iue C; Fig. 5 also shows end view of plate P. made of iron, or of galvanized sheet iron, crimped at each side for rigidity, as laid from leg to leg to support rubble or concrete work, as a base for masonry; the adjustable bar 5; the recess I), 6; and exhibits the support of the masonry and the means to secure smoothness of the smoke chamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,- n
A device of the class described, composed of a rectangular ring with legs attached thereto, in a manner to produce a truncated pyramidal adjustablefixture; the legs of angle iron, having at the upper ends a perforated lip set at an angle therewith to give the fixtures a broad base; said legs being connected with the ring by screw bolts, as shown, to permit adjusting movements; the feet of the legs resting in recesses of the masonry; the base of the legs having acute angular form in both directions on the frontal aspect to approximately coincide with the level of the base on which they rest; in the lateral aspect of the xture the angle is so acute as to have the fixture resting on four points to permit free movement and to avoid disturbing the levels of the ring in each direction; having a tie bar to adjust the base of the lateral sides to the dimension of the throat A; an adjustable brace attached to the distal legs to dene the pocket D, and to control and support the masonry at that region; all the several parts being formed and connected With each other substantially as described.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I affix hereto my signature, y.
