To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. OEHLKE, citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners, and is especially adapted and intended for use with water heaters.
An object of the invention is to provide a burner which will be more efiicient than burners heretofore used, the added efficiency arising from the particular construction of the burner whereby the mixture is more freely delivered than with other burners. The burner is of that type having a screen to prevent back firing.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a front elevation of the burner. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an edge view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the tubular Bunsen or mixing tube and 7 the gas inlet thereto, and these parts may be of any suitable or desired construction. This tube leads to a chamber or casing at its upper end, said chamber being formed by two castings or sections one of which is indicated at S and the other at 9. These are expanded or enlarged laterally to form an elongated discharge chamber which may be substantially rectangular in shape. The side or section 8 is integral with the tube 6, and the section 9 is detachable, being fastened to the opposite section by screws 10 at opposite ends of the chamber. The sections forming the chamber meet at the ends thereof on an inclined or diagonal line in dicated at 11, and the inclined meeting edges serve to clamp the ends of the perforated screen or diaphragm 12, which extends. diagonally across the chamber, and the purpose of which is to assist in mixing the air and gas to prevent back fire. Lugs 13, at the bottom of the plate 9, engage under the shoulders of the side 8, and assist in holding the sections in position.
At its upper edge the section 9 is provided wit-h a plurality of projections or teeth 14 which are spaced apart to provide a plurality of discharge openings at the top, the mixture passing from the discharge chamber directly out through said openings. The ends of the projections bear against the upper edge of the screen 12, as indicated at 15 and serve to clamp the edge of the screen against the edge of the wall 8.
Located above the burner body thus constructed is a double cap or spreader which serves to divide the mixture and spread the same in opposite direct-ions. Said cap is a V or trough shaped casting, as indicated at 16, having supporting pieces 17 at its opposite ends, which rest on the ends of the body and serve to support the cap in position above the same. Each flange or side of the cap has depending ribs or projections 18, and the cap is fastened on the body by a screw 19.
It is to be noted that the lower edge or angle of the V shaped cap or trough 16 is spaced above the discharge openings at the top of the body, so that the mixture has a free flow directly through said openings, between the spaced fingers or projections 14, and out at the top of the body, and is then spread or deflected in opposite directions by the flanges of the cap. I have found that this is advantageous, as compared to prior structures, because the flow is not obstructed or impeded, and better results are obtained. Also, the cap is somewhat wider than the top of the discharge chamber or body, and the side walls 8 and 9 taper or incline slightly toward each other at the top, whereby the air or draft up beside said walls, as induced by the flow of the mixture, is also deflected laterally, so that a wide or spreading flame is produced which tends to increase combustion and to prevent smoky flames. The teeth or projections 18 overhang or project outwardly beyond the line of flow and assist in mixing the fuel constituents and in preventing back burning into the body of the burner.
WVhat I claim is:
A burner comprising a casing or chamber consisting of opposite sections united on a diagonal line, a screen clamped between the edges of said sections and extending diagospreader extending along and above the roW of openings and spaced therefrom.
