GAS BURNER.
Application filed April 5,
This invention, relates to certain new and useful improvements in gas burners, and has for its primary object to provide a burner that is designed in a manner to cause the proper mixture of air and gas for perfect combustion in an automatic manner without the aid of adjustable devices and is intended for various uses where gas is used for heat, such as in oil fields, factories, buildings, and also for household use or the like, the ideaembodied in this invention ranging from a heater for a relatively small coffee urn to a steam boiler.
A further object of the invention is to provide a burner of the above type that is extremely simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, the burner embodying two main parts, one of which part being an air mixer and the other part the burner proper, or burner tip.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a burner of the above type wherein the burner tip is constructed to produce a spreadingflame or splash with the flame spreading over a considerable area at the burner tip for direct heating of a larger surface.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature ofthe invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form,'combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan View ;of a gas burner constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, partly in sect-ion of the burner showing the two main parts of the burner having a screw thread connection with the burner proper or tip of elbow formation;
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2 showing the burner tip with the divergent gas deflecting plate;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken 011 line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly in section of a coffee urn with the improved burner positioned beneath the same;
Figure 6 is a side elevational view, partly 1927. Serial No'. 181,192.
and gas mixer comprises a tubular member or pipe section 3 that is internally threaded at one end while the opposite end tapers to a smaller diameter and terminates in an interiorly threadedcoupling 4 for attachment to a gas supply pipe 5 as shown in Figures 5 and 6. A plurality of circumferentially spaced air inlet/openings 5 of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 are provided in the pipe section 3 adjacent the coupling end i. for the aid of combustion.
The gas nozzle and its mounting is shown more clearly in Figure 2 and being associated with the air and gas mixing part of the burner,con'iprises anexternally threaded tubular fitting 6 mounted in the inner end of the coupling end 1- of the burner with the inner closed end 7 thereof provided with a central internally threaded opening. A relatively long nozzle 8 has one end threaded into a threaded opening in the closed end 7 ofthe tubularfitting 6 and is of a length to position the outlet end thereof substantially in line with the adjacent end of the pipe section 3.
The burner proper or tip comprises a pipe section of elbow formation having a straight leg 9 externally threaded at its outer end for reception in the internally threaded end of the pipe section 3 while the angularly bent end 10 of the elbow forms the burner tip. The open end 11 of the burner tip 10 has the opposite sides thereof cut away as at 1:2 to form recessed or notched port-ions defining lateral openings, this construction being clearly shown in Figures 2 and A pair of divergent plates 13 are anchored at their ends to opposite side walls of the burner tip and as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 extend inwardly and outwardly of the end 11 of the burner tip, the plates being disposed to overlie the side openings 19. with the outer ends thereof directed above said openings to cause a lateral projection of a flame jet, while the inner ends of the divergent plates 13 are spaced from each other as at let a so to provide for an axial flame jet.
The use of a burner of the type disclosed herein is capable of many applications and as shown in Figure 5, the burner is associated with a coffee urn A, while in Figure (l the burner is associated with a steam boiler B. The mixing of air and gas for perfect combustion is accomplished in a burner of this type without the aid of control devices for varying the area of the air inlet openings and the burner works perfectly under consumption of low or high pressure and other variations. The flame issues from the burner tip in the matter schematically illustrated in Figure 7 and insures a wide spread of flame over an increased area as illustrated.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
lVhat I claim as new is 1. In a burner of the character described, a burner body comprising a gas and air mixer section and a burner tip section, said mixer section having ail-inlet openings in its side wall, a gas nozzle inclosed therein, the burner tip section being in the form of an elbow, a pair of outwardly divergent plates at the outlet end of the burner tip the wall of the burner tip at its outer end being cut away and underlying the divergent plates to cause lateral projections of the flame jet, and the inner adjacent ends of the plates being spaced to permit an axial flame projeetion.
2. In a burner of the character described, a burner body comprising a gas and air mixer section and a burner tip section, said mixer section having air inlet openings in its side wall, a gas nozzle inclosed therein, the burner tip section being in the form of an elbow, a pair of outwardly divergent plates at the outlet end of the burner tip, and said plates terminating outwardly of the outer end of the burned tip, the wall of the burner tip at its outer end being cut away and underlying the divergent plates to cause lateral projection of the frame jet, and the inner adjacent ends of the plates being spaced to permit an axial flame projection.
23. A gas burner comprising a gas and air mixer section having an inner end portion tapering smaller in an inward direction and having air inlet openings therein, a gas supply nozzle mounted at its inner end in the inner end of the tapered inner end portion of the gas and air mixer section and projecting axially of the latter forwardly past said air inlet openings, said gas and air mixer section being devoid of means for restricting or varying the inlet of air through said air inlet openings, a burner tip section on the outer end of said gas and air mixer section, and a pair of outwardly and laterally divergent deflector plates secured in the outer end of said burner tip section.
a. A gas burner comprising a body composed of a gas and air mixer section and a burner tip section having an outlet end, and a pair of outwardly and laterally divergent deflector plates secured in the outlet end of the burner tip section and spaced from the sides of the latter, the deflector plates being spaced apart to permit a central flame projection. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. 1 Y i SILAS M. EVANS.
