Description

W. T. COHOLAN.
TRUSS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 21, 191 7 Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
wILLIAMTHoMAsco oLAN, OF'NEW BRITAIN, coixuvnorrourj-f TRUSS.
To all whom it may concern:
. ,Be it known that I, WILLIAM'THoMAs OOI-IOLAN, a citizen of the United States, re-
" portion being made of fabric, suitable to be siding at .New Britain, in ,the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Trusses, of which the following is a specification. 5 "f 1 Myinvention relates to improvements in trusses, and the'object of. my improvement is to produce a truss that is held in place by a belt without the use ofsprings, the belt washed, that has few metal parts, such metal parts as are provided being removable, and the belt construction is double, comprising an inner belt that supports the pad and an outer belt for applying pressure, f and the pad is so related to the belt structure as to be -subject to a positive and substantially I A g I through the openings between the 'barsf" direct inward pressure. V In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a truss embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, on an, enlarged scale of the front portion of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the'same. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the inner belt portion.
Fig. 5' is a plan view, on a still further enlarged scale, of' the pad and adjacent parts.
Fig. 6 is a sectional View on the line as w is I of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the securing device for the inner belt. V 7
My improved truss consists of a duplex belt construction, comprising an inner belt 10 and an outer belt 11 superimposed on the said inner belt, and a pad 12 of special construction that is incorporated in the structure of the inner belt 10 and positioned at.
the proper point for applying pressure to the person as the particular case may require, such pressure when in use being applied through the medium of the outer belt 11.
- Both belts are made preferably of woven cotton fabric, suitable for being washed without injury, and they are heldin cooperating position by means of a set of loops 26 secured to the inner belt 10 and projecting outwardly from the outer face thereof Specification of Letters Patent. -Patentgd Sept, Application filed September 21, 191%., Serial naieamo,
suitably to v the outer b61511 jslipr d therethrough; 7 1 V The inner belt has rheovei-ap ingeha portions secured together: by a'jloop fplate l3thatis relatively flat, so as to avoid eX cessive bunching of material at the point of connection for the'said end portionspsuch most part only for the purpose of holding the ends 1n their proper relative position,as
y connection being relied upon merely for the x such as shownor of anyother suitable form.
The loop plate 13 ismaideofisheet materialfandfcomprlses a middle cross-barf to WhiChthc'fiXepl end lfi ofthe in nertbeltlO issecured' and a pairof end bars 17, the
free endjlS of, the said belt being rove pressure, whereby a relatively small belt tension will suflicev for efiecting the neces sary local, inward pressure. The particular constructlon of the pad for eifectingjhis result comprises a part 24"that serves as the pad proper that projects inwardly from' a the inner face of the inner belt,10, and a part 19 that pro ects outwardly an-appre' ciable amountin the form of a pad extension on .the outer face of the said rinner belt 10. .7 V V Thusas the outer belt 11 is tightened the portion 20 that eXtends'over the pad 12 is in positive contact with the outer part or-pad' extension 19 and exerts a pressure that is directed generally inwardly, and independently of-the adjacent body portion 21 of the e structure of the inner belt 10. r
The result described is facilitated by the use of a pair of slip loops 26, positioned one on each side of and adjacent the pad 12,
as particularly shown in Fig. 5, the said slip loop 26 serving as guides for'the outerbelt relatively to the said pad.
The tongueless buckle 14 is removably secured to the fixed end of the outer belt 10 in some suitable manner as by means of a loop 25 engaged with a bar 22 on the buckle 14, the overlapping ends of the loop 25 being secured together by means of a button 23 and button hole.
The fixed end portion 16 of the inner belt 10 is in the form'of .a loop that passes around the middle bar 15 of the loop plate,
as shown in Fig 2, and the free end portion 18 in its engagement with the loop plate passes through the two openings in the loop plate 13, one on each side of the said middle bar 15, and has a portion superimposed on the end loop portion 16 on the outer side thereof, and which in use is in contact with the outer belt 11 and pressed inwardly thereby, so a to produce a holding friction between the superimposed portions of the inner belt.
The use of the tongueless buckle l t for the outer belt permits of tighteningthe belt positively to correspond to the particular adjustment of the elfective length of the inner belt'lO. V 1
'I claim as my invention 1. A truss comprising an inner belt for supporting the pad, and an outer belt for applying pressure to. the said pad, the pad flopies of this patent may be obtained for being secured to the said inner belt, and the said outer belt being superimposed on the said inner belt and comprising a portionsaid outer belt being superimposed on the said inner belt and comprising a locally curved portion that passes over the said pad, the said pad comprising a part that projects inwardly from the said inner belt and a pad extension on the outer side of the said inner belt that is in contact with the said locally curved portion of the outer belt and a pair of slip loops being mounted on the said inner belt and positioned one on each side of and adjacent to the said pad, suitably to serve as guides for the outer belt relatively to the said pad.
