BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1c, 1918.
Application filed December 7, 1916. Serial No. 135,573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL H. FANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book holders and its primary object resides in providing a holder adapted to support two open books side by side, and intermediately above the same a pamphlet, card, sheet or book of smaller dimensions.
My invention is particularly designed for use in studying Christian Science the thorough comprehension of which demands the simultaneous use of two books, the Bible and Science and Health, and constant reference to a pamphlet, card or sheet upon which the course of study is set forth.-
Another object of my invention is to provide a book-holder of the character described, which is provided with recesses to receive the ends of book markers used to mark places in the books for ready reference, and projecting beyond the ends of the same.
A still further object of my invention resides in providing a book-holder which is adjustable to different angles, which may be used for carrying the books from place to place, and which is collapsible to facilitate packing and to permit of its being stored in compact form. I
lVith the above objects in View, my improved book-holdcr consists of the combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1 is a face view of my improved book holder showing the manner in which it is used.
Fig. 2 a face view of the book holder without the books and pamphlet shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, a sectional end view of the book holder as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 a fragmentary perspective view of the book rest at the foot of the holder.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 2 designates a flat board which constitutes the back of the holder and which at its lower edge connects with a relatively rectangularly disposed slat 3 which provides a rest for the support of books Placed against the back.
A U-shaped brace 4 is hinged in clevises 5 on the rear side of the back to support the same in a slanting position and a chain 6 connecting the brace with the back serves to limit the movement of the one with relation to the other.
A clevis 7 secured on the rear side of the back adjacent its upper edge and substantially midway between its ends, cooperates with a headed pin 8 placed at a distance be low the same to secure a combined clamp and support for the reference card or pamphlet used in connection with the books placed upon the rest.
The combined clamp and support consists of a plate 9 of resilient material the lower portion 10 of which is curved up and inwardly to provide a support for a pamphlet placed against the plate and a clamp for securing the same against accidental displacement.
The plate is rigidlv secured upon a stem 12 which projects beyond its lower edge for insertion into the clevis 7 and which at its lower end has a notch to admit the headed pin which cooperates with the clevis to securely fiX the pamphlet holder with relation to the back of the body member of the device.
In the use of my invention the back of the book-holder is placed in a slanting position upon a table or other surface and is firmly supported by the pivoted brace as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The books 13 are placed against the back and upon the rest 3 in an open position as shown in Fig. 1, and the reference card or pamphlet 14 is inserted in the clamp of the plate 9 which by means of its stem is secured above and intermediary of the two open books.
The three articles are thus positioned for ready reference by a student seated before the holder, it being understood that the back may be tilted to any angle within the limits of the chain as may best suit the vision of the reader.
The rest 3 is provided with apertures 15 to admit the protruding ends of book markers 16 which in the study of Christian Science are placed between the leaves of the books to mark a place or places for ready reference.
When the book holder is not in use the pamphlet holder is detached from the back of the book support and thebrace is folded against the back. In this condition the device may be placed in a drawer or other receptacle of limited dimensions or it may be used for carrying the books from place to place.
Having thus described my book holder in the best form at present known to me I desire it understood that variations in the form and arrangement of its parts may be resorted to within the scope of the following claim:
A book holder of the character described comprising a back, a book-rest at the lower edge thereof, a brace having a limited pivotal movement on said back to support it in a slanting position, a clevis adjacent the upper edge of the back, a pin projecting from the back beneath said clevis, and a RUSSELL H.
