Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. RICE, a citizen, of the United States, residing at San Francisco, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Binder Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bind-er devices.
My improvements are especially designed by me for, use intemporary binders or loose sheet holders such as are illustrated and described in U. S. Letters Patent to VVigg-inton No. 1,174,458, issued March 7, 1916., and I have shown one form of'the binder illustrated'in that patent in connection with my improvements.
My improvements. are, however, capable of embodiment and are desirable for use with other forms of temporary binders and in other relations where it is desirable to facilitate the handling'of loose sheets.
The main objectsof this invention are:
First, to provide an improved device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose sheet holders and particularly those used in machine account'systems. I
Second, to provide an .improved device which facilitates the handling or manipulation'ofloose record sheets. 7 7 7 Third, to provide an improved device which facilitates the manipulation and handling of temporary binders and the insertion and removal of the'sheets.
Furtherobjects and objects relating to details and economiesof construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objectsof my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. H V v A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the embodiment illustrated, I provide a rectangular base or frame comprising sides 1,1, and ends 2, 2 supported upon legs 3. The holder members, designated generally, by the numerals 4 and 5, are pivoted at 6 between the end members of the frame or base. These holder members comprise the side members 7 and 8 and coa'cting end members 9 and 10, respectively. Theend members and the side members of the structure illustrated are disposed at right angles to each other. The width of the end members is such that their edges clear when the. holder members are swung to their collapsed or extended positions. 7 i V The inner end'sof theside members 7 and 8 are extended-to, provide stopslljand 12, respectively. When the holder members are swung to their extended position, as shown in Fig. VI, these stops engage the coacting stops 13 and 1 1 on the base or frame. When the holder members are fully collapsed, the end member 10 engages the stop 14: while the end member 9 engages the stop 15. When swung to their erected position, as shown in Figs. I, II, III and IV the side members will engage the covers of the binder resting upon the end members supporting it in its closed position. Theweight of the binder resting upon the end members tends to hold the binder closed.
In Figs. II, III and'IV, it will be seen that the holder automatically adjusts itself within its scope to binders of varying thickness. When the holder members are extended they provide a pair of V-shaped holders each adapted to receive one of the binder members which I designate generally by the numeral 16.
These binder members are connected by binding strips 17 as is described in the patent referred to. The end members are transversely slotted at 18 to receive these binding strips. 7
To complement or supplement the end members, I provide an A-shaped supplemental end or center member, designated gen erally by the numeral 19, having arms 20 and 21 secured to each other.. The arm or part 20 of this center or supplemental end member-is adapted'to edge-abut with the end member 10, while theother part or arm 21 overlaps the end member 9, 9, and abuts the filler block 22, disposed in the angle of the holder member 4.
This center member is provided with hand holes 23 and with dowels 24 connecting it with the end member 10. In the structure illus trated the part 21 when adjusted to position lies at an acute angle to the side 7, so that fanning or stepping of the upper'edges of the sheets is secured to facilitate fingering.
In the modifications shown in Figs. VIII, IX and X, a stop block 25 is mounted on the ends of the frame or base, the ends of the block being beveled to coact with the side stop extensions 11.
The supplementary end member 26 of this embodiment is adapted to edge-abut both holder end members, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. X.
In Fig. XI, I illustrate the adaptation of the end member 26 to the preferred embodiment shown. 7
By thus forming and arranging the parts, I secure a structure which may be readily adjusted to provide a pair of V-shaped holders each adapted to receive a binder mem ber' with sheets resting thereon and the sheets transferred from one holder to the other or the device may be adjusted to support the binder in its closed position, as illustrated.- I
My improved binder device greatly facilitates the manipulation of sheets and loose sheet holders or' binders. 'I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications in structural details, which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is Y 1. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a rectangular frame, a pair of holder members each comprising'side and end members disposed at right angles to each other and pivoted between the end members of said frame for adjustment to an outwardly or inwardly inclined relation, the width of the end members being such as to permit them to clear when swungto and from their inner and outer positions, the inner ends of the side members being extended to provide'stop engaging parts, stops coacting with such parts to support said holder members in their extended position and with said end members to limit the c0llapsing movement of said holder members, 7
and a pair of removable interchangeable A- shaped supplemental end members, each having one arm adapted to edge-abut one end member, the second arm of one supplemental member being adapted to overlap the second end member, the second arm of the other supplemental member being adapted to 'edgeabut the second end member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members disposed at right angles to each other and pivotally mounted for adjustment to an outwardly or inwardly inclined relation, the width of the end members being such as to permit them to clear when swung to and from their inner and outer positions, and a remOVable A-shaped supplemental end member having one arm adapted to edge-abut one end member and provided with dowel connections therefor, and the other arm adapted to overlap the other end member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members disposed at right angles to each other and pivotally mounted for adjustment to an out wardly or inwardly inclined relation, the width of the end members being such as to permit them to clear when swung to and from their inner and outer positions, and a removable A-shaped supplemental end member having one arm adapted to edge-abut one end member and the other arm adapted to overlap the other end member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members and pivotally mounted within said frame for adjustment to an outwardly o1 inwardly inclined relation, the end members being adapted to swing past each other, and a removable A-shaped supplemental end member, one arm of which is adapted to edge-abut one end member and the other adapted to overlap the other end member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members and pivotally mounted within said frame for adjustment to an outwardly or in-- wardly inclined relation, the end members being adapted to swing past each other, and a removable A-shaped supplemental end member.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members and mounted for adjustment to provide a pair of holders each adapted to receive a binder member with sheets resting thereon or to be swung to an upright position with the side members engaging the covers of a binder resting upon the end members, and a removable supplemental end member.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of holder members each comprising side and end members and mounted for pivotal adjustment to provide a pair of holders each adapted to receive a binder member with sheets resting thereon or to be swung to an upright position with the side members engaging the covers of a binder resting upon the end members, and a removable supplemental end member.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder comprising a pair of members mounted for adjustment in oppositely inclined relation to provide a pair of holders each adapted to receive a binder member with sheets resting thereon or to an inwardly inclined relation to support a binder in its closed upright position and a removable supplemental end member.
