BINDER DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1917. Serial No. 146,106.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen P. WIGGIN- won, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in binder devices. H The main objects of my invention are:
First, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose sheet holders and particularly those adapted for machine accounting systems.
Second, to provide. an improved binder device which facilitates the handling or manipulation of loose record sheets.
Third, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handling of temporary binders or loose sheet holders for the manipulation and insertion of sheets therein.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices andmeans described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. Y
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view showing one adaptation of my improvements providing a pair of opposed binder member and sheet holders.
Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section of my improvements adapted as in Fig. I, with a binder and sheets disposed therein.

ing shown. The binder constitutes, speak ing gencrally,a pair of separably associated binder members. A
The binder shown. in Figs. XI, XII and The sheets 9 are perforated to receive thev posts .andare also preferably slotted, atlO to receive the binding strips when used in the binder shown in my said patent: The slots 10 are also adapted to coact with guide members to facilitate the alining of the sheets.
The binders and sheets may be manipulated in the device, as will appear from the following description;
The device comprises 3 holder sections or members, designated generally by the numerals 11, 12 andl3, the sections 11 and 13 being adapted to be associated interchangeably with the section or member 12, the sections or members 11 and 12 being associated to provide the adaptation shown in Figs. I, II' and III, while the sections 12 and 13 are associated 'to provide the adaptation or ad.
justment shown in Figs. VI, VIII and XIII, inclusive.
I will first describe the sections or holder members 11 and 12 in their adaptation or association shown in Figs. I, II andfIII. The support member 11 comprises base members ldis'posed on edge and having V-shaped' recesses in their upper edges for the side member 15 and the end member 16 constituting a binder member or sheet holder adapted to receive one of the binder memhere with sheets arranged thereon with their inner ends abutting the end member, as shown, for instance, in Fig. II.
The holder or support member 12 comprises a pair of base members 17 on which the side member 18is mounted and also an adjustable coacting end member 19 which is hinged at 20 to the lower edge of the side member 18. This end member 19 is adapted to be supported upon the base members 17, as shown in Fig. VI or to rest on the base members 11 of the section 11, as shown in Figs. I, II and III, when the holders l1 and 12 are associated. When the holder members are associated in this relation the base members 17 are telescoped with the base members 1 1 and securedtogether by the rod '21 which is arranged through holes provided therefor in the base members 11 and holes in the plates 22 secured on. the inner sides of the base members 17. These base members 17 are longitudinally slotted at -23-to engage'the cleats 24 on the inner sides of the outer base members 141 of the 2 section 11. This provides a secureconnecting means for the parts and permits their being readily disconnected as occasion requires.
To accommodate the binding strips of the binder illustrated in Fig. II the end member 16 of the section 11 is provided with slots.
25 while the end 19 of the section 12 is provided with slots 26 alined with the slots 25 when the holder members 11 and 12 are adjusted into coacting relation. The binding strips drop into these slots, as shown in Fig. II, when the binder is disposed in the support with one binder member in each holder.
To facilitate the alining or the grouping of the sheets on the binder members I'providev the sheet'guides 27 and 28, the guide 27 being detachably mounted on the end 16, while the guide 28 is detachably mounted on the end '19. The details of the mounting for these guides are not illustrated as they form no part of'this invention, the mountingbeing preferably that shown in myapplication for Letters Patent, filed Nov. 26, 1915, Ser. No. 63,566.
To provide the U-shaped holder illus trated in Fig; VI the members 12 and 13 are associated together. The member 13 comprises a pair of base members 29 connected by the cross piece 30. The side member 31 is hinged at 32 to be adjusted to the upright position shown in Fig. VI or to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. XII. The base members 29 are provided with tongues 33 adapted to extend into the slots of the base member 17 in which position they are secured by means of the rod 31 arranged through holes in the plates 22 and the holes in the tongues. When secured in this position the side member 31 coacts with the side member 18 and end member 19 in providing a U-shaped holder, or the side member 31 may be swung down to a horizontal position constituting an independent binder member holder support, as shown in Fig. IX. The side member 31 is provided with arms 35 which extend under the end 19 and raise it to an inclined position, as illustrated, when the side member 81 is collapsed. The arms 35 are so disposed as to constitute abutments for the binder member arranged upon the collapsed side member. The arms have curved ends so that they slide freely against the under side of the end member 19'. \Vhen the end member 19 is thus supported it is at right'angles to the side member 18.
The side member 31 is supported by the links 37 'and '38pivoted to each other at 39, the link-37 being pivoted at 10 to the side member and the link 38 being pivoted to the base members 29' at 11. Stops 12 are provided to limit'the swing ofthe links.
With the'parts assembled and adjusted as shownin Figs. VI and VIII the binder may be'arranged therein, as shown in Fig. VIII,
lilllllilllllllllillllllillilllllillllilllllllllllllllllllltllllHMllllmlltltmtut and the sheets shifted from one side to the other as occasion may require.
If desired to support part of the sheets in a horizontal position the device may be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. IX, and the sheets transferred from one binder member to the other. 1
When it is desired to close the binder the device is preferably adjusted to the position shown in Fig. IX which brings the end member 19 to a position at right angles with the side member 18 to aline the sheets so that the post at may be readily inserted and the other binder member adjusted to position and the adjusting mechanism drawn up, as
indicated in Fig. X.
To close the binder when the device is adjusted as shown in Figs. I, II and III the sheets are all transferredto the binder member resting in the support member 11 1n which adjustment the end 16 is at right angles to the side 15, so that the sheets are properly alinedto receive the post. The
binder member which has been resting on I the support member 12 is then adjusted, as shown in Fig. III, and the binder locked up. In both manipulations the guide members 27 and 28 should be removed before the sec ond binder member is superimposed on the sheets. i
In Figs. XI, XII and XIII a post type of binder, heretofore described, is arranged in the support. The device is manipulated for this typeof binder substantially the same as has been described when the binder of my said patentis employed.
My improved binder device is also advantageous for the handling or manipulation of loose sheets independently in a loose sheet binder. My improved binder device very greatly facilitates the handling of loose sheets and loose sheet binders in the keeping of records, particularly when it is desired to keep such records on accounting machines, as 1 they are commonly designated. It, however, I
is of material advantage even where the records are to be kept by hand. 1
I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied the same in practice. I have ,not shown certain modifications or adaptations which might be desirable for certain conditions and uses,as Ibelieve the disclosure made will enable those skilledin the art to whichmy invention re lates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may renderdesirable.
