Uriginal application med February 2, 1917, Serial No. 146,106. Divided and this application iled September 7, 1917. Serial No. 190,232.
To all 'whom zt may concern.:
Be it known that ll, GEORGE P. WIGGIN- ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Binder Devices, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in binder devices. l
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose sheet holders and particularly those adapted for machine accounting systems.
Second, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handling or manipulation of loose record sheets.
Third, to provide an improved binder device which` facilitates the handling of temporary binders or loose sheet holders for the manipulation and insertion or removal of the sheets. l
Further objects, and` objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
i ll accomplish the objects of my invention -by the devices and means describedin the following specification. The invention is clearly dened and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view` of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. lll is a vertical longitudinal section of the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig, l with a binder disposed therein.-
`Fi lllll is a detail side elevation with a close binder disposed in one of the holder members. j j
Fig. llV is a perspective view of the holder members separated..`
Fig. V is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to'line 5-5 of Figs. ll and lill.
Fig. .Vlie a perspective `vievv of another adaptation of my invention providing a U- shaped'binder holder.
Fig. Vlll is a perspective View of the holder member, shown in Fig. Vl, separated. Y ln the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the binder illustrated is that shown in my Patent #1,174,458, March 7, 1916, and comprises a pair `of covers 1, 1,- having clamping members 2, 2, pivotally mounted thereon, and binding strips 3 extending between the covers, which are provided with suitable adjusting means whereby the binder members may be retracted and extended, the adjusting means not being shown. rlhe binder constitutes, generally speaking, a pair of separably associated binder members.
rfhe sheets 4 are preferably such as are shownin my said patent but, as they form no part of myA present invention, they are not described with further detail herein.
l provide three holder sections or members, designated generally by the numerals 5, 6 and 7 the sections 5 and 7 being adapted to be associated interchangeably with the section 6. This is described in detail in my `copending application, filed February 2, `1917, Ser. No. 146,106, of which application this is a division.
The sections or members and 6 are associated to provide the W or double troughlike holder, shown in Figs. ll and Hl, while the sections` 6and 7 are associated to provide a lll-shaped holder, as shown in Fig. Vl.
'llhe holder member 5 comprises base members 8 disposed on edge and having tlshaped recesses in their upper edges forthe side member 9 and end member 10 constituting a binder member or sheet holder adapted to `receive `one ofthe binder members with the sheets arranged thereon with their inner ends abutting the end member,
`as shown in Fig. ll. `'lhe holder or support member 6 comprises a pair of base members 1l on which a side member 12 is mounted and an adjustable end member it,
Patented ltllay 2d, idle.. ""5
y the end member 13 being pivoted at 14 to the side member 12. The end member 13 is adapted to be supported upon thebase members 8 or to rest upon the base members 11 of the holder 6. The base members 11 are adapted to telescope between the base memthe end member 13 rests upon the inclined surfaces of the base members 8. The
v end membe-r 10 has longitudinal slots 21 therein, while the end member 13 has longitudinal lslots 21 alined with the slots 21. When the holder members are assembled as shown in Figs. I and II these slots are positioned so that the binding strips 3 may extend through lthe slots when the binder isy arranged in the device with one binder member in each holder, as is shown in Fig. II. This provides la secure Aconnection for the parts and holds them in proper alinement. i
To facilitate the alining or groupingv lof the sheets on the binder members I provide sheet guides 22 and 23 with which notches '24 of the sheets may be engaged. VThese guides are preferably vdetachably mounted on the end members but, as the details of the mounting form no part of this invention, they are not further described herein.
ToV provide a U-shaped holder, as shown in Fig. VI, I associate the members '6 and 7. The member 7 comprises a pair of base members 25 connected by a cross piece 25 and having tenen-like extensions 26 at their forward ends adapted to it into the 4recesses 11,'as 'shown in Fig. VI.
The rod 15 lis disposed -through the plates and these extensions, as shown in Fig When associated as shown'in Fig. VI, the side member 27-coacts with the side member and yend member 13 'to providev a U- shaped holder when adjusted lto the lupright position as shown in Fig. VI, or fthe side 27 maybe adjusted `to a fhorizontal position, thus providing a pair oi holders. 'The side member 27 is provided with carriage top braces 28, Ethe iside b'ein'g hinged to ythe *base at'2'9. The side lmember `27 -is provided l'with arms 30 which eoactw-ith fthe end -mem- -b'er 13 when theside 1member l2'7 is adjusted 6o' 5to la )horizontal position. This is described Vin detail 'and claimed in my said Vcopendi-ng rapplication, the -vsame Albeing'shown Eherein in Iorder to better illustrate the `adaptabili'ty rof fthe member',
My improved binder device is advantageous for handling loose sheets independently of loose sheet binders and it greatly facilitates the handling of binders and loose sheets in the keeping of records, especially where it is desired to keep such' records on accounting machines, as they are commonly designated. It, however, is of material advantage where the records are to be kept by hand.
I have not illustrated or described all the embodiments or adaptations lor' my invention which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which this invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
