To all whom may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WIGGIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of hfiichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices, of which the following is a specification.

Ihis invention relates to improvements in binder devices.

My present improvements are especially designed by me for use with temporary binders or loose sheet holders such as are illustrated and described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,174,458, issued to me March 7, 1916, and I have shown one form of the binder illustrated in that patent in connection with mypresent improvements. My present improvements are, however, capable of embodiment and are desirable for use with other forms of temporary binders and in other relations where it is desirable to facilitate the handling of loose sheets.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide an improved device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose sheet holders and particularly those adapted for machine accounting sys tems.

Second, to provide an improved device which facilitates the handling or manipulation of loose record sheets.

Third, to provide an improved device which facilitates the manipulation and handling oi? temporary binders or loose sheet holders for the insertion or removal of the sheets.

Fourth, to provide an improved binder device which iacilitates the handling of loose sheets for machine accounting systems in which it is necessary that the sheets at certain stages of their use may be supported in a horizontal position.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detaileddcscription to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in thedirection of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.

Referring to the drawing, the binder illustrated comprises a pair of

covers

1 and 2 chambered to receive the adjusting mecha nism. The binding strips 3 extend between the covers. The adjusting mechanism is preferably that shown in U. S. Letters Patent No. 87 8,340, Feb. 4:, 1908, to Harry F. Bu'shong.

I preferably provide clamping members 4, which are pivotally connected to the covers. The clamping members f have sockets 5 for the removable post 6. The sheets or leaves 7 are provided with notches being open at the rear edge of the sheets and holes 9 adapted to receive the post 6. These holes 9 are closed so that when the posts are engaged therewith the sheets cannot be removed except as they are lifted from the ends of the posts or freed by removal of the posts. When the posts are removed the sheets are freed from the binder. VVh'e'n the posts are inserted and the clamping members adjusted thereto the sheets are securely retained within. the binder. The sheets are provided with a plurality of spaced notches and holes, the notches and holes being correspondingly spaced. This arrangement of parts is substantially that shown in said Letters Patent referred to.

I provide a pair of holders, each adapted to receive and support one of the binder members, comprising, in the structure illustrated, the cover and clamping bar so that the sheets may be superimposed thereon. These holders I designate generally by the

numerals

10 and 11 in Fig. I of the drawing.

The holder 10 comprises a horizontally disposed side member 12 and a vertical end member 13, the side and

end members

12 and 13 being disposed at right angles to each other.

The holder 11 comprises an outwardly inclined side member 14 and an inwardly inclined member 15 disposed at right angles to the side member and providing a troughlike holder. In the structure illustrated the holders are disposed with their end members adjacent and their upper edges meeting.

In the preferred embodiment illustrated the horizontally disposed side member 12 of the holder 10 is extended below the holder 11 and constitutes the base. The end members have vertical slots 16 therein adapted to receive the binding strips.

In the keeping of records with certain accounting machines it is necessary at times to support certain sheets in a horizontal position. By forming the holder 10 as I have described the sheets are effectively supported for convenient use in such machines. The sheets are supported so that they may be conveniently transferred from one holder to the other. i

In order to facilitate the manipulation of the sheets, I provide a tapered support 17 consisting of a pair of tapered side members 18 connected by a suitable cross piece 19. This support is adapted to be inserted under either binder member or under the sheets where the binder is not present. In Fig. III I have illustrated the same arranged in the holder 10. The end members, in the structure illustrated, are, as stated, disposed at right angles to the side members so that when the binder members are arranged thereon and the sheets disposed with their inner ends abutting the end members the outer ends of the sheets are properly alined or squared up. When the support 17 is arranged under one of the binder members the sheets arranged on such binder member are supported at an acute angle to the coacting end members, so that the outer ends of the sheets abutting such end member are stepped, thereby facilitating the fingering of the sheets.

The support is adapted to be disposed on the holders in a longitudinal position as shown in Fig. III, or in transverse relation as shown in Figs. X-XVII, inclusive. This is desirable owing to the difierent systems of ruling and the like and also the operator or user may arrange the support as best suited to his convenience.

To support the sheets when the support is arranged transversely I provide the sheet abutments 30 adapted to be removably engaged in'the strap-like clips 31 secured on the under side of the holder side member. These abutments 30 are preferably angled pieces and may be disposed at either side of the side member, thus permitting the sheets being inclined in either direction transversely. The abutments are particularly desirable for use in connection with holders having. horizontally disposed side members as illustrated in Figs. XXVII, inclusive. The support may be conveniently inserted. or removed according as it is desired to square up the sheets or to secure the stepped effect.

To facilitate the alining of the sheets on the binder members when they are trans ferred from one holder to the other I provide the sheet alining tray 20 which is recessed at 21 to receive the binding strips and to permit the insertion or removal of the posts 6. The binding strips coact with the ends of the recesses, thus constituting positioning means for the alining tray. The tray is of such width that the sheets may be dropped into it and are properly alined or guided to receive the binding members. The alining tray may be removed after the sheets are properly positioned in the binder.

In the modification shown in Fig. VIII the side member 22 of one of the holders hinged at its inner end, as at 28, so that it may be tilted to support the sheets in a horizontal position or at an acute angle to the end member of the holder. The side 22 is supported in its raised position by the link 24L, which is pivoted at 25 to the side member and provided with a series of notches 26 adapted to be engaged with the pin 27 on the end member. The means for supporting the binder member as shown in Fig. III is, however, preferred, as there are in that structure no adjustable parts which are subject to strain.

In Fig' XIII I show a post type of binder, the posts being removed.

In Figs. XV, XVI, and XVII no binder is illustrated, the holders directly consti tuting the sheet supporting means.

Claims to these features of my invention are presented in a copending case filed Feb. 5, 1917, Serial No. 146,761.

I preferably provide a plurality of posts 6 of different lengths and to support these in convenient position I provide a holder consisting of a pair of perforated plates 28 secured in a spaced relation on the under side of the side member 11 to receive the posts and a stop plate 29 disposed at the rear of and at an angle to the inner perforated plate, as shown in Fig. VI.

My improved binder device greatly cilitates the use of temporary binders for the keeping of records, particularly where it is desired to keepsuch records on accounting machines, as they are commonly designated. It also greatly facilitates the handling of the sheets, even where used for hand record keeping.

By providing one holder adapted to support the sheets in a horizontal position the sheets are not only supported in a manner desirable for certain machines, but so that they may be suitably supported for the making of recordsby hand without removing the sheets from the device.

I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied the same for the market. I have not shown certain modifications or adaptations which might be desirable for certain conditions and uses, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may render advisable.

Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising side and end members, the side member of one holder being disposed horizontally and its coacting end member being disposed vertically, the side and end members of the other holder being disposed in an oppositely inclined relation, a side abutment for said horizontal side member, and a tapered support adapted to be disposed on said horizontal side member in a longitudinal or transverse position to support the sheets in a longitudinally or transversely inclined position.

2. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising side and end members, the side member of one holder being disposed horizontally and its coacting end member being disposed vertically, the side and end members of the other holder being disposed in an oppositely inclined relation, and a tapered support adapted to be disposed on said horizontal side member in a longitudinal or transverse position to support the sheets in a longitudinally or transversely inclined position.

3. The combination with loose sheets and 'a'temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders comprising side and end mem bers adapted to support the binder members with the sheets superimposed thereon and with their edges abutting said end members, a side abutment adapted to be removably mounted on one of said holders, and a tapered support adapted to be disposed on the side member having such abutment in a transverse or longitudinal relation to the holder to support the sheets in a transverse or longitudinally inclined relation, for the purpose specified.

4. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon, the sheets being transferable from one holder to the other, one of said holders being provided with a side abutment, and a support adapted to be arranged on such holders to support the binder member arranged thereon and the superimposed sheets in a transversely or longitudinally inclined relation.

5. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon, the sheets being transferable from one holder to the other, and a support adapted to be arranged on such holders to support the binder member arranged thereon and the superimposed sheets in a transversely or longitudinally inclined relation.

6. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon, one of said holders being provided with a sheet abutment, and a support adapted when in operative position to support the sheets with their lower edges abutting said abutment and their upper edges in a stepped relation to facilitate fingering.

7 The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon, the sheets being transferable, and means for supporting one of said binder members and its superimposed sheets in transversely inclined relation on its holder.

8. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of

pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising slde and end members, the side member of one holder being disposed horizontally and its coacting end member being disposed vertically, and a tapered binder member support associated with said horizontally disposed side member to support the binder member and superimposed sheets. in an inclined position.

9. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising side and end members, and a binder member support removably associated with said holders to vary the angle of the superimposed sheets relative to the holder end member.

10. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders comprising side and end members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, and a tapered binder member support removably associated with said holders. 1

11. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor, of a holder comprising side and end members, said holder being adapted to support a binder member with sheets superimposed thereon and abuttingthe holder end member, and means for adj ustably supporting the binder member in said holder with the superim posed sheets at right angles to the end memher to facilitate the alining of the sheets or at an acute angle to the holder end member so that their outer ends are supported in a stepped relation to facilitate fingering.

12. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising side and end members, the side and end members of one holder being disposed at right angles to each other, a binder member support associated with such holder to vary the angle of the sheets superimposed thereon relative to the coacting end member.

13. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor, of a binder holder comprising side and end members disposed at right angles, and a binder member support associated with said holder to support the superimposed sheets at an acute angle to the end member.

The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members and binding strips extending between said members and posts removably associated with said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding strips and holes adapted to receive said posts, of a pair of holders comprising side and end'members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, said end members having openings for said binding strips, the side member of one holder being disposed horizontally and its coacting end member being disposed vertically and at right angles thereto, the side and end members of the other holder being disposed in an oppositely inclined relation and at right angles to each other, a tapered binder member support removably associated with said holders, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members to facilitate the alining of the sheets thereon, said tray being recessed at its inner end to receive the binding strips which constitute tray positioning means and to permit the insertion and removal of the binding posts.

15. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members and binding strips extending between said members and posts removably associated with said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding strips and holes adapted to receive said posts, of a pair of holders comprising side and end members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, said end members having openings for said binding strips, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members to facilitate the alining of the sheets thereon, said tray being recessed at its inner end to receive the binding strips which constitute tray positioning means and to permit the insertion and removal of the binding posts.

16. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members and binding members extending between said binder members and a post removably associated with said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding members and holes adapted to receive said post, of a pair of holders comprising side and end members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, the side and end members of both holders being disposed at right angles to each other, a support member removably associated with said holders, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members to facilitate the alining of the sheets thereon, said tray being recessed at its inner end to receive the bind-- ing members which constitute positioning means therefor-and to permit the insertion and removal of the posts.

17. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members and binding members extending between said binder members and a post removably associated with. said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding members and holes adapted to receive said post, of a pair of holders comprising side and end members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members to facilitate the alining of the sheets thereon, said tray being recessed at its inner end to receive the binding members which constitute positioning means therefor and to permit the insertion and removal of the posts.

18. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders comprising side and end members disposed oppositely with their end members adjacent, the side member of one holder being disposed horizontally and its coacting end member being disposed vertically, the side and end members of the other holder being disposed in an oppositely inclined relation, a binder member support removably sociated with said holders, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members to facilitate the alining of the sheets thereon.

19. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising separably associated binder members, of a pair of holders adapted to support the binder members with sheets superimposed thereon and comprising side and end members, the side and end member of one holder removably associated with said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding strips and holes adapted to receive said post, of a sheet alining tray recessed at its inner end to receive said binding strips which constitute positioning means therefor and to permit the insertion and removal of said post.

21. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor, comprising binder members and binding members extending between said binder members and a post removably associated with said binder members, said sheets having slots adapted to receive said binding members and holes adapted to receive said post, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with said binder members and recessed at its inner end to receive said binding members which constitute positioning means therefor and to permit the insertion and removal of said post.

22. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members and binding members extending between said binder members, and a sheet alining tray removably associated with one of said binder members and recessed at its inner end to receive said binding members.

23. The combination with loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members upon which the sheets may be superimposed when the binder is open and binding strips extending between said binder members, and a sheet alining tray having a flat unobstructed face adapted to be superimposed upon a binder member or upon the sheets superimposed thereon to facilitate the alining of sheets to be inserted in the binder, said tray being recessed at its inner end to receive said binding strips which constitute positioning means therefor.

24. The combination of loose sheets and a temporary binder therefor comprising binder members upon which the sheets may be superimposed when the binder is opened, and a sheet alining tray having a fiat unobstructed face removably associated with said binder and adapted to be superimposed upon one of the binder members or the sheets superimposed thereon to facilitate the alining of sheets to be inserted in the binder.
