BINDER DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 18, 1918.
Original application filed February 2, 1917, Serial N 0. 146,105. Divided and this application filed August 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WIGGIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in binder devices.
My improvements are especially designed by me for use with temporary binders or loose sheet holders such as are illustrated and described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,174,458, issued to me March 7, 1916, and I have shown one form of the binder illustrated in that patent to better illustrate the use of my certain improvements. My present improvements, however, are capable of embodiment and are desirable for use with other forms of temporary binders in other relations where it is desirable to facilitate the handling of loose sheets, as
- is more fully illustrated in my application for Letters Patent Serial No. 146,105, filed Feb. 2, 1917, of which application this is a division.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved device which facilitates the use of temporary bindere or loose sheet holders, more particularly those adapted for machine accounting systems.
Second, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handling of loose sheets and of temporary binders or loose sheet holders therefor.
Third, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handling of loose sheets for machine and other accounting systems in which it is necessary at certain stages that sheets may be supported in a horizontal position.
Further objects, and ob ects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitel appear from the detailed description to ollow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described n the following specification. The invention 1s clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting a preferred em- Serial No. 188,424.
bodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention with the sheet alining tray and the sheet support and abutment members removed.
Fig. II is a perspective view with a binder arranged in the holder and the sheet alining tray and support member in position.
Fig. III is a perspective view showing the removable sheet abutment in assembled position and the support member disposed in a transverse relation.
Fig. IV is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. III.
Fig. V is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 55 of Fig. IV.
Fig. VI is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. II, illustrating the manner of using the sheet alining tray.
Fig. VII is a detail perspective of a modified construction in which the side member of one of the holders is adjustable.
Fig, VIII is a detail longitudinal section one a line corresponding to line 88 of Fig. VII.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the binder illustrated comprises a pair of covers 1 and 2 provided with clamping members 3 and connected by the binding strips 4. The clamping members have sockets 5 adapted to receive removable binding posts, not shown.
The sheets 6 have notches 7 adapted to receive the binding strips and holes 8 adapted to receive the binding posts. The means for adjusting the binding strips are now shown, the binder and sheets illustrated being shown and described in considerabledetail in my said patent.
I provide a pair of holders each adapted to receive a binder member comprising, in the structure illustrated, a cover and clamping bar, and support the same so that sheets may be superimposed thereon. These holders I designate generally by the numerals 9 and 10. The holder 9 comprises a horizontally disposed side member 11 and a vertical end member 12, the side and end members 11 and 12 being disposed at right angles to each other. The holder 10 comprises the outwardly inclined side member 13 and the inwardly inclined end member 14; disposed at right angles to each other and providing a troughlike holder. In the structure illustrated, the holders are disposed with their end members adjacent and the upper edges of the end members meeting. In the embodiment shown in Figs. I to VI, the side member 11 of the holder 9 is extended below the holder 10 and constitutes the base. The end members have vertical slots 15 therein adapted to receive the binding strips 4: when the binder members are separated and arranged in the holders.
In the keeping of records with certain accounting machines, it is necessary or desirable at times to support certain sheets in a horizontal position. By forming the holder 9 as I have described, the sheets are effectively supported for convenient use in such machines. The sheets are supported so that they may be conveniently transferred from one holder to the other.
In order to facilitate the manipulation of the sheets, I provide a tapered support 17 consisting of a pair of tapered side members 18 connected by cross piece 19. This support is adapted to be inserted under either binder member or under the sheets where the binder is not present. In Fig. II, I have shown the support arranged in the holder 9. The end members in the structure illustrated are disposed at right angles to the side members so that when the binder members are arranged thereon and the sheets disposed with their inner ends abutting the end members, the outer ends of the sheets are alined or squared up and when support 17 is'arranged on a holder, the sheets are supported at an acute angle to the coacting end members, so that the outer ends of the sheets abutting said end member are stepped to facilitate thefingering of the sheets.
The support is adapted to be disposed on the holders in a longitudinal position, as shown in Fig. II, or in a transverse osition, as shown in Fig. III. This is esirable owin to the difierent systems of ruling and V the like and also so that the operator may arrange the support as best suited to his convenience.
To support the sheets when the support is arranged transversely, I provide sheet abutments 20 adapted to be removably engaged in the strap-like clips 20"secured to the under side of the holder member 9. These abutments 20 are preferably angled pieces and may be disposed at'either side of the side members, thus permitting the sheets being inclined transversely in either direc-,

hardest tion. The abutments are particularly desirable for use in connection with? holders having horizontally disposed side members. The support may;be conveniently inserted or removed according as it is desired to square up the sheets or to secure the stepped eifect.
To facilitate the alining of the sheets on the binder when they are transferred from one holder to the other, I provide a sheet alining tray 21 which is recessed at 22 to receive the binding strips to permit the insertion and removal of the posts. The binding strips coact with the ends of the recesses, thus constituting positioning means for the alining tray. The tray is of such width that sheets may be dropped into it and are properly alined to receive the binding members. The alining tray may be removed after the sheets are properly positioned in the binder. The tray is preferably disposed under the body of the sheets butmay be disposed upon iheets superimposed upon the binder mem- In the modification shown in Fig. VII, the side member 23 is hinged at its inner end as at 24 so that it may be tilted to support the sheets carried thereby at an acute angle to the end member 12. The side member 23 is supported in its raised position by the link 25 which has a series of notches26 adapted to engage the pin 27 on the end member 12.
My improved binder device greatly facilitates the use of loose sheets for temporary binders, particularly where it is desired to keep such records on accounting machines as they are commonly designated. It, however, greatly facilitates the handling of sheets even where used for hand record keeping.
sirable for certain conditions and uses, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may render desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. In a device of'the class described, the
