GEORGE P, WIGGINTON, F KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGIIOR T0 KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER COMPANY, OF KALAMAZQO, MICHIGAN.
LOOSE-SHEET DEVICE.
Application filedOetober 16, 1924. Serial No. 743,988J
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,' GEORGE P. WIGGINTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented eertainnew and useful Improvements in Loose-Sheet Devices, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in loose sheet devices. I
My improvements are especially designed by me for the handling of loose sheets in accounting or record systems.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved loose sheet device which enables the handling and manipulation of loose sheets in making entries and also provides means for securely holding them in'a binder for filing or for refera 2 ence purposes.
Second, to provide an improved loose sheet device which enables the very rapid manipulation of the sheets in the actual work of accounting and also in adjusting them for such work.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of myinvention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which: 7
Fig. I is a perspective view of a sheet support constituting a part of my improved loose leaf device. I
Fig. II is a perspective view of the binder with the sheets bound therein, the binder constituting another element of my loose sheet device.
Fig. II is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. II showing details of the binder.
Fig. III is a perspective view of the sheet body removed from the binder and held together as a unit by one of the post bars.
Fig. IV is arear end elevation of the sheet body with a pair of post bars in engagementtherewith, parts of the sheet body being broken away to better illustrate the structural details. I
Fig. V is a perspective view of one of the post bars.
Fig; VI is a side elevation of the sheet support with'the body of sheets therein illustrating one of the steps of manipulation of the device.
Fig. VIII is an enlarged detail section of the sheet support with the bo dy of sheets therein.
Fig. VIII is a side elevation of the sheet support showing further details of the sheet manipulation. j
Fig. IX is afragmentary plan view of one of the sheets. I
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to, thedrawing, the sheets 1 are provided with notches 2 in their binding edges and holes 3 adjacent their binding edges. The purpose of the holes and notches will appear as the description proceeds.
I provide a binder which. in the structure illustrated consists of the covers 4E having clamping bars5 hinged thereto,. the clamping bars having sockets 6 therein. The binder members are connected by the flexible strips 7, the notches 2 being adapted to re ceive these binding strips when the sheets are arranged within the binder, there being a plurality of notches so that the sheets may be disposed in an offset or in an alined relation as may be desired.
I provide post bars 8 which are notched .at 9 to receive the binding strips, each post bar being provided with a stud or pin 10 adapted to engage one of the sockets 6. Each post bar is provided with post bases 11 and 12, these being, in the structure illustrated, of different height and adapted to receive post members 13 which are of the same length so that when mounted upon the post bases each post bar is providedwith a pair of posts, one of which is longer than the other.
Each post bar is provided with a hole 14 arranged in alinement with one of the sockets 6 and adapted to receive the long post of the other post bar which projects therethrough constituting a socket-engaging member or pin, the sheet body being held together as a unit by the post bars as shown in Fig. IV, one post of each bar extending entirely through the body of sheets thereby rendering it practical to handle the same as a unit either for placing in the support shown in Fig. I or replacing in the binder. This facilitates the manipulation of the sheet body for insertion or removal of sheets or leaves, it being practical to divide the sheets at any desired point.
To facilitate the manipulation of the sheets in accounting or machine bookkeeping, I provide a support designated generally by the numeral 15 and comprising a pair of V-shaped holders 16 formed of side members 17 and coacting end members 18. The side and end members of one holder are arranged at an acute angle so that when the sheets are arranged therein as shown in Fig. VI, the upper ends of the sheets are supported in a stepped or fanned relation. The side and end members of the other holder 'are disposed at right angles so that when the sheets are arranged therein as shown for instance in Fig. VIII, they are properly alined to receive the binding posts. The holder end members are provided with guides 19 for alining the sheets thereon or for supporting them in their offset relation as may be desired.
The holder side members have holes 20 therein adapted to receive the projecting ends of the long posts when the sheet body is arranged in the holder, see Fig. VII.
With the parts thus arranged, the sheets may be placed in the binder as shown in Figs. II and II, the same being very securely retained therein and the binder being especially adapted for the handling of large sheets such as are sometimes required in accounting systems.
IVhen it is desired to manipulate the sheets the binder is opened and the sheet body removed as a unit, as shown in Fig. IV. The top post bar may then be removed and the sheet body held together as a unit, as shown in Fig. III, by the bottom post bar and its post, and may be placed in the support as shown in Figs. VI and VII. The other post bar is then removed and the sheets may be manipulated as desired, the common practice being to transfer them from one holder to the other.
IVhen the sheets have all been transferred or it is desired to reassemble them in the binder, the top post bar is engaged with the sheets as shown in Fi VIII, the sheets lifted from the holder and placed in the binder, the other post bar being put in place and the binder closed; or, the second post bar can be engaged with the sheets before the sheet body is placed within the binder.
My improved loose sheet device is very efficient in the handling of sheets, enabling the rapid manipulation thereof with a minimum of wear and tear upon the sheets, and at all times they may be easily kept in position for convenient manipulation.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an en'ibodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations or modifications which I contemplate as, for instance, in the binder proper, or in the holder proper, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with sheets having notches in their binding edges and holes adjacent their binding edges, of a binder comprising binder members having sockets therein, post bars provided with posts of dif ferent lengths and having a socket-engaging pin adjacent one end thereof and hole adjacent the other end thereof aligned with said sockets, posts of different lengths mounted on said post bars, the longer post of each bar being adapted to project through the hole of the other bar and constitute a socket-engaging pin, and a sheet support comprising a pair of sheet holders having side and end members disposed so that the sheets may be arranged on the side members with their binding edges abutting the end members, said side members having holes therein adapted to receive a projecting postend when the sheet body together with a post bar is arranged in a holder, said end members having guides thereon coat-ting with the notches of said sheets for aligning them on the holders to receive the posts.
