UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
JOHN L. GASSIDY, F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION .forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,866, dated December 12, 1882.
' Application filed June12,1882. (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. (JAssInr, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of temporary binders 'for periodicals, sheetmusic,
&c., in which a series of slats or bars are used for securing the papers in the binder; and the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved temporary binder with the covers removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view enlarged. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section and Fig.5 is aperspective view, showing the binder in position for receiving the papers to be temporarily bound. l
A A indicate the back, which is constructed in two parts. The upper part, A, consisting of a thin strip of wood of equal thickness throughout, is provided with a narrow transverse groove, B, sawed in its under surface near each end, and is secured by screws to the lower part, A, which has the usual convex rear surface, and is made slightly longer and broader than the upper part to form an offset around the latter to accommodate the wire frame 0 and the guard D.
The frame 0, which is hinged to one side of the back, is constructed of a single piece of wire bent in such manner as to form a raised part, E, extending from the center nearly to the ends thereof, and a raised part, F, at each end, which projects across the back, with the ends of the wire bent downward and backward, so as to rest upon the part A of the back. The frame is hinged to the back in the offset therein at points between thesaid raised parts by means of clips G or in any other suitable manner.
The raised part E, which extends above the front surface of the back, is thus made to constitute one of the guards for supporting the inclosed papers at the sides to hold the same firmly within a given space. The corresponding guard, D, on the opposite side of the back is formed by a separate piece of bent wire rigidly secured thereto.
As a means of securing the wire frame in a closed position a sliding catch, I, is provided at each end of the back, which catch is formed with asleeve for receiving an end of the wire, and a tongue, which is adapted to slide in one of the transverse grooves B in the under surface of the upper part, A, of the back.
The catches may be placed in position either before or after the parts A A are secured together, and the grooves B are to be closed at the ends by pieces of metal driven into the wood or in any other suitable manner to allow the proper movement to the catches and prevent them from being displaced. The body of each catch thus slides under one end of the part A of the back in a suitable recess, and the sleeve, which alone projects without, is accommodated in a groove formed across the end of the part A. The covers J are to be secured to the back in the usual manner, as indicated in Fig. 3.
I11 securing periodicals, &c., in the hinder the wire frame is to be turned up from the back, as shown in Fig. 5, with the slats sup ported near the ends of the wire. The first slat is then to'be dropped partially down the parts F, when the leaves of the matter to be inserted into the binder may be conveniently placed in engagement with the slat. The second slat is then to be dropped and a paper placed in engagement therewith in like manner, and so on until the binder is full.
In cases where the number of pamphlets to beinserted is equal to the number of slats in the hinder the slats may all be entirely removed from the frame, placed between the pages of the pamphlets, and then returned one by one to the wire frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a temporary hinder, the combination, with a'suitable back and a series ofperforated slats, of a supporting-frame for the slats, con- 7 structed of a single piece of wire hinged to one side of the back, and having its ends bent upa eeaeec ward and across the same to form raised parts for supporting the slats, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination, with the hack and the perforated slats, of the frame formed of a single piece of wire hinged to one side of the baclnand having its ends bent across the same and downward and backward to form a foot or support for the frame at the opposite side of the back, and the sliding catches formed with sleeves adapted to receive the ends of the wire and hold the frame in a closed position, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a temporary hinder, the combination, with the back and the slats, of the frame formed of a single piece of wire hinged to one side of the back and adapted to fold across the same, and having its central portion bent upward to provide a guard on one side for the papers to be inserted, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a temporary hinder, the combination, with the stationary wire guard and the wire frame having the slats supported thereon, 0f 25 the back formed with a marginal offset for accommodating the said frame and stationary wire guard, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a temporary hinder, the combination, with the wire frame, the slats, and the stationary wire guard, of the back formed in two parts secured together, and the catches for holding the ends of the wire frame, which are secured in recesses between the ends of said parts and adapted to slide therein, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a temporary hinder, the combination of the back, the hinged wire frame made nearly equal in length with the back, and having raised parts at the ends, and the slats having a perforation in each extreme end, substantially as shown and described, and'for the purpose set forthf JOHN L. OASSIDY. Witnesses:
