UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo JOHN S. HICKS, OF ROSLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDEXING BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,075, dated September 23, 1873; application led August 4, 1873.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, J onN S. Hicks, of Roslyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indexing Books, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention relates to the indexing of books; and consists of tags of any suitable material bound with the paper in the back of the book, and hereinafter more fully described.
rlhe drawing is a perspective view of a bo'ok having tags inserted according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the book; B, the leaves, and C the back. D is the tag. This tag consists of a strip of parchment or any suitable material, of any desired Width, and sufficiently long to project from the leaves and receive its appropriate letter or ligure. 'Ihese tags are designed to contain all the letters of the alphabet or any desired number of them.
Advertisements of various kinds may be printed on one or both sides of the tags.
These tags are designed for directories and dictionaries, as Well as for account-books, and Will greatly facilitate the handling of the books and the nding of any particular name or subject contained in the book. These tags, attached as they are and confined in the back of the book, support the leaves in opening the book, and consequently prevent damage or mutilation. The tags are designed to be sufciently strong and so strongly attached as to raise any part or portion of the pages of a book, and the projecting ends may be made in any form or have any attachment to their ends to allow of convenient handling.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A book provided with index-tags bound into the back with its leaves, and projecting beyond the side edges thereof, as shown and described.
