Patented July 1, 1873.
AM. PHOYU'LITHOGHAPH/C UNITED STATES VVILHELM VALENTIN,
PATENT QFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,392, dated July 1, 1873; application filed J une 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM VALENTIN V of New York, in the county and State of New or enlarging the table together, and hanging the same on suitable pivots in the frame of the table, so that when the top-plate of the table is drawn apart, these leaves can be swung around on their pivots, so as to come to lie upon the frame of said table, and connect with the two halves of the top plate.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents a top view of my improved extensiontable, with the top plate drawn apart. Fig. II is a cross section at line 2, 3, of Fig. I; and Fig. III is a cross section at the line 4, 5, of Fig. I.
A represents the frame of the table, which may be made of any desired shape, and supported on suitable legs, (not represented in the drawing.) Upon this frame, A, the top plate B B,'made in two halves, is supported and provided with suitable sliding or guiding bars 0 O and D D,to allow the same to slide outward, arranged in the usual manner. To
the inner side of the frame'A, cross-bars E E,
are arranged, in which one of the extensionleaves, F, is pivoted atn, capable of turning or swinging around said pivot. The second extension-leaf, G, is hinged to this other lea-f,
F, at m, and the width of both leaves when unfolded corresponds with the width of the table. The length of the extension-leaves depends upon the size of the table, and may be made in one length, as shown in the drawing; or the same may be made in two or more parts by arranging additional cross-bars simi lar to the bars E, to which the central part of the leaves are pivoted. On the bottom of the cross-bars E a bar or rod, H, is attached, to
support the extension-leaves F and Gr, when folded together and placed within the tablet'rame A. The abutting edges of the extension-leaves and of the two halves of the tabletop are provided with suitable tongues and grooves, fitting each other, whereby the several parts are held firmly together at their joints. At each end of the frame of the table cams J J are arranged, whose projecting points so fit into suitable recesses 12 or 1 made in a central bar, L, attached to the tableplates B B, for the purpose of looking and holding the same in their desired position when brought together without the extension leaves, or when said extension leaves are moved between them.
\Vhen it is desired to move the extension leaves F G between the top plates B B, the latter are drawn apart a little more than the length of the extension-leaves, on account of their projecting tongues. The leaves F G are then turned around on their pivots n, so that they come to rest upon one side of the tableframe A, (see Fig. III,) when the leaf G is turned around its joint at until the same rests upon the opposite side of the table-frame, when the top plates B B are pushed inward so that the projecting tongues come into their corresponding grooves, after which the same are locked firmly in this position by means of the cams J J, and thereby held perfectly tight together.
What Iclaiin as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the frame A and slid- WVitnesses:
HENRY E. ROEDER, CHARLES Drrnnnnon.
