Be it known that I, MAX WURM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of eX- tension tables in which are employed folding-fillers pivoted within the table below the level of the relatively movable top-members, so as to be concealed thereby when the table is of normal size and the top-members are closed against each other.
The present improvements consist in the various novel and peculiar arrangements and combinations of the several different parts of the apparatus, all as hereinafter fully set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

The top-members 6 and 7, constitute the table top proper when the table is in un-A extended condition and they may be slid toward and away from each other by means of the ordinary horizontally moving slides 8 and 9, fixed tothe member 6, and the slides 10 and 11, fixed to the other member 7. The slides 8 and 9, engage the inner sldes of the respective guides 4 and 5, by means of tongue and groove connections 12 and 13, while the slides 10 and 11, engage the outer sides of said guides by means of tongue and groove connections 14 and 15, See Figs. 4 and 5. The inner and abutting edges of the top members are provided with coperating pins and sockets 16, and 17, respectively, for engaging each other when the members are forced together and for likewise engaging corresponding sockets and pins on the edges of the foldingfillers.
The central folding-filler 18, comprises two sections 18EL transversely at 19, and this filler is mounted directly over the bridge 3, by 1 eans of the arbor 20, mounted across the ack of the section 18, in the ears 21, secured on said section, and the swinging- arms 22 and 23, which are pivoted to the respective ends of the arbor 20, and have their lower ends pivoted at 24 and 25, respectively, to the side edges of the bridge. When the filler 18, is folded and lowered into its position of disuse, the axis of'motion of its arbor 20, lies to one side ofthe center line of the table, while the pivotal axis 24-25, lies to the other side of such line, as will be understood from Figs. l, 4 and 5. This arrangement permits of the filler operating in a shallow space above the bridge and below the level of the two side fillers. The length of the swinging-arms is such that they stand at an angle when the filler is unfolded in horizontal position of use, as shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6, and I employ a brace or prop for each side of thefiller. These props 26 and 27, respectively, are pivoted at their upper ends to the respective ends of the arbor 20, and at their lower ends are provided with locking-notches 28 and 29, respectively,
and 18", hinged together 30 and 31, re- 11o spectively, which are secured to the side edges of the bridge 3. The lower ends of the props are turned inwardly at 32 and 33, respectively, so that such ends act as stops against the under side of the bridge, in the upward swinging movement of the ller when it is being raised into position of use. A hand-hole 34, is formed in the bridge to give ready access to the hand of the operator for giving the initial movement to the filler when it is to be raised from its lowered position. See Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5. The
locking-notches in the lower ends of the props are disposed on a slight upward angle so that when the props are raised and swung into supporting positions, with the studs in the notches, the props cannot be shifted out of placepbutcchaveA to be raised slightly to release them from the studs. The weight of the props automatically swings them into position when the filler is raised and thus I dispense with springs for moving the props into engagement with the studs. The filler lis provided with locking sockets and pins 35 and 36, for engaging with the pins and sockets onthe abutting edges ot' the cooperating top-members of the adjacent `fillers as the case may be. In order to have the pins 36, clear the swinging-arm and the adjacent prop, the hinge ear 21, of the arbor located' at that edge of the filler, is elongated as at 37, so as to project beyond the edge of the filler, as indicated in Fig. 3. On the under side of the filler section 182l is a pin 38, which enters a hole 39, in the upper edgeof the guide 4, and on the under side of the section 18b is a pin 40, which enters a socket 41, in the guide 5, when the filler is unfolded in position of use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. These pins and sockets serve to hold the filler in central position and also aid to support t-he sections when spread out.
At each side of the central-filler 18,.is arranged a side-tiller adapted to swing into position of use and disuse, and as these two fillers are constructed alike, a description of one will serve for both, the same numbers of reference being used for both said fillers, hut with the prime mark on one. The side filler 42, comprises two sections 43 and 44, hinged together at 45, see Figs. 1 and 8. Upon the back of the ller section 43, is secured a hanger or bracket 46, through which loosely passes the filler support 47, which issupported by and slides in horizontally projecting brackets 48, and 49. which are secured to a standard 50, on the bridge 3. On

These rests are shown in the form of metal pieces secured to the bridge and projecting laterally a sufficient distance to accommodate the sliding movement on the llers. Each side filler is provided with sockets and pins 53 and 54, respectively, on its side edges for coperating with the sockets and pins on the abutting edges of the top-members and the central filler as the case may be, such sockets and pins being Vindicated more particularly in Figs. 1 and 3.
The side fillers4 42 and 42', are mounted above the level of the central-filler 18, and in such position that when folded they may be slid laterally on the supporting member 47, toward each other and into contact and then lie between the folded central filler and the overhanging brackets 48 and 49, as
tions, as shown in Fig. 3. The pins 55 and 57, on the respective slides 8 and 10, cooperate with the pins 56 and 58, respectively, on the under side of the fillers 42 and 42 and act to separate the fillers from each other when they are to be folded and swung into lowered position. See Fig. 1.
The filler supporting member 47, is made of two telescoping parts 47a and 47, the former being a rod which slides in the'other tubular part. On the end of the rod within the tube is a collar 58, which takes against a stop 59, within the end of the tube 47", and prevents the rod from being drawn out ofthe tube. On the outer end of the rod is a slide 60, which moves in a guide 61, on the under side of the top-member 6, and likewise on the end of the tubular part 47?, is a slide 60', which works in a guide 61', on the under side of the top-member 7. yIn this way the telescoping filler supporting member is sustained at its eXtreme ends and` 'swung thereon. The slides 60 and 60', also act to open out the telescoping member by reason of the inner closed ends of the guides 6l and 61', engaging the slides in the outward movement of the top-members when the same are moved away from each other, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2. In this drawing out movement of the telescoping member, `the two side fillers which are swung thereon are each carried laterally away from each other so as to uncover the subjacent central filler which may then be swung upwardly into operative position, whereupon the two side fillers may be swung upwardly and spread out in horizontal poto be extended only the width of one iiller then the central one alone is brought into` position of use with the two side illers stored in their folded condition, as shown in Fig. G. If two fillers only are to be used, the central one is left-in closed position, with the two side fillers raised and spread out, as shown in Fig. 7 Thus the table may be used with one, two or three fillers to eX- tend it or all of the fillers may be folded and stored beneath'the table top and the apron 62, which depends from the under side of the top-members. When the fillers are all stored, as shown in Fig. 3, the two side fillers lie each half way over the subjacent central ller and this arrangement is a Very compact one, as the central filler is adapted to swing in a comparatively shallow space.
When the fillers are folded and swung into their lowest positions, the apparatus is auto-y matic in moving the side fillers apart to gain access to the subjacent central one, as well as in moving the side fillers together, the two positions being shown in Figs. 1 and 3, respectively. In order to prevent the tubular member 47, from being slid out of the bracket 49, I placca fixed collar 63, onthe end of such member, as more particularly shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler support slidably mounted below said top members and adapted to be moved endwise on its bearings, and folding fillers pivoted to swing on saidy telescoping support, substantially as described.
2. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler-supporting member mounted below the level of said top-members and having sliding connection with the under side of said top-members, and folding-fillers mounted to swing on said supporting-member, substantially "as described.
3. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler-supporting member mounted below the level of said top-members, a slide on each section of said telescoping member, and a guide on the under side of each top-member for the respective slides to travel in, and folding-fillers meunted to swin on said sup ortin -member substan tially as described.
4. In a table of the class described, the
--cembination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler support slidably mounted below said top members and adapted to be moved endwise on its bearings, the said support comprising a tubular section and a rod sliding therein and provided upon its end within the tubular sec- 'tion with a stop for preventing the rod from being drawn out of said tubular section, and folding fillers pivoted to swing on said telescoping support, substantially as described.
5. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, horizontally projecting brackets mounted upon a c'entral part of said table,
filler-supporting bars slidably mounted in' said brackets and having sliding connection at their respective outer ends with the adjacent top-member, and folding-fillers mounted upon said respective supportingbars and adapted to turn thereon and to slide laterally and capable of being swung in folded positions beneath the supportingbars and of being slid laterally in such folded lowered positions.
6. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a bridge having horizontally projecting overhanging brackets, a filler-supporting-member mounted in said brackets, and folding-fillers mounted to swing on said supporting-member and to slide laterally thereon and adapted to fold beneath said supporting-member and to slide laterally in folded position between said brackets and bridge, substantially as described.
7. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler supporting member slidably mounted below the level of said topmembers and comprising two sections each having capacity of endwise movement relatively to said top-members, and a foldingfiller mounted to swing on each of said sections of the supporting-member, substantially as described.
8. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping-filler supporting member mounted below the level of said topmembers and comprising two sections each having a sliding connection with the under side of the adjacent top-member, and a folding-filler mounted to swing and to slide laterally on each of said sections of the supporting-member, substantially as described.
9. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler-supporting member slidably mounted and having endwise movement relatively to said top-members, a set of three folding-fillers each comprising hinged sections, the central filler beingl pivotally mounted below the level of said telescoping member centrally of the table,
the two side fillers being mounted to turn and slide laterally on said, telescoping-member and adapted to be folded and swung beneath said member and slid together in such positions in a plane between said. telescoping-member and said central filler when the latter is folded and lowered, the length of said telescoping-member when contracted being less than the aggregate widths of the two top-members and greater than the aggregate widths of said side fillers and when extended being greater than the aggregate widths of said three folding-fillers.
10. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler-supporting member mounted below the level of 'said top-members, a slide atreach end of said telescoping member and a guide on the under side of each top-member for the adjacent slide to travel in,'foldingfillers having a swinging and sliding connection with said telescoping-member and a stop near each end of said member, the said stopsadapted to engage said connections when the llers are folded and swung below said telescoping member and force the folded fillers toward each other when the said top-members are moved toward each other in closing the table, substantially as described.
11. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, horizontally arranged brackets mounted below the level of said topmembers and extending transversely of the table, a fillersupporting member mounted on said brackets, folding-fillers mounted to swing on said supporting member and to slide laterally thereon when folded belowsaid supporting-member, the connection between each of said llers and the supporting-member being spaced away from the inner edge thereofso as to clear the adjacent bracket when the fillers are slid together in folded position, substantially as described.
12. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a bridge, a filler-supporting member mounted below the level of said top-members, folding llers mounted to swing on said supporting-member and adapted to slide laterally thereon when folded and swung beneath the same, and horizontally projecting rests mounted on said bridge below said fillers for the same to rest on and to slide laterally when folded, substantially as described.
13. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a telescoping filler support slidably mounted below said top members and adapted to be moved endwise on its bearings, and the respective ends of the telescoping support being slidably attached to the respective top members, a set ofl folding fillers each comprising hinged sections pivoted to swing on said support, the fillers at the respective sides of the central one being adapted to slide laterally on said support when in unfolded positions above said support and also when in folded positions below said support and also being adapted to be slid together when folded and swung below said support, and the central filler of the set being adapted when folded to be swung on said support in a plane below the level of the folded and lowered side llers, substantially as described.
14. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a set of swinging folding-fillers each comprising two sections hinged together, a horizontally arranged filler-supporting member mounted below the level of said topmembers, the side fillers of the set being mounted to swing on said supporting-member and to slide laterally thereon when folded and unfolded, the central-filler of said set being mounted to swing on an axis below the level of said supporting-member, and said side fillers being adapted to slide toward each other above said central-filler when it is folded and swung into its closed position, substantially as described.
15. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a folding-filler comprising sectionsV hinged together, swinging arms between which said ller is pivoted, and a swinging prop pivoted to said filler and having its lower end provided with a locking-notch, and a xed pin with which said notch engages when the prop is moved into upright position, substantially as described.
16. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a folding filler comprising sections hinged together, swinging-arms between which said filler is pivoted, and a swinging prop pivoted to said filler and adapted to support it when unfolded into horizontal position, and a stop on the foot of said prop for limiting the upward movement of said folding filler in swinging it into position of use, substantially as described.
17. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, a folding ller comprising sections hinged together, an arbor mounted across the underside of one of said sections, swinging arms pivoted to the ends of said arbor, and a depending prop pivoted to each end of said arbor, for sustaining the ller in horizontal position, substantially as described.
18. In a table of the class described, the combination of top-members having a relatively sliding movement toward and away from each other, a horizontally sliding fillersupporting bar mounted below the level of said top-members and having its outer end operatively and slidably connected with the adjacent top-member, and a folding-filler mounted on said bar so as to turn and to slide laterally thereon.
19. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively sliding top-members, two telescoping horizontally sliding ller-supprtingbars mounted below the level of said top-members and each having its outer end operatively and `slidably connected with the adjacent top-member, and a folding-filler mounted on each of said bars so as to turn and to slide laterally thereon.
20. In a table of the class described, the combination of relatively slidable top-members, two telesco ing horizontally sliding filler-supporting ars mounted below the level of said top-members and each having its outer end operatively and slidably connected with the adjacent top-member, and supported from such member by said slidable connection, and a folding-filler mounted on each of said bar-sso as to turn and to slide laterally thereon.
21. In a table of the class described, the? combination of relatively movable top-members, a filler-support slidably attached to` said respective top-members, and foldingillers swung upon said support. A

25. In a. table of the class described, the combination of relatively movable top-members, an endwise movable filler support mounted upon a Xed part below the level of said top-members and having its outer end `ed to be moved endwise by the operation of said top-members.
27. In an extension table, the combination of a table top member, an endwise movable swinging leaf support slidably connected with said top member, and a swinging leaf mounted on said support.
