The present invention relates to a folding bed construction and proposes an article of furniture of this class of the combination type wherein provision is made for the attachment of various accessories. An object of the invention is to provide novel features of adjustment to permit convenient manipulation and use .of the construction as abed in rooms of small size. Another object of the 1o invention is to enable a sleeping room to be quickly converted into aliving-room, dining' room or the like.
In order that the present invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, a preferred form or embodiment of the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the article of furniture, in closed position, the open position being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding side View;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the construction in its opened position, when it 1s to be used as a bed; and
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a modified form of the invention in the closed, and in a partially opened position, respectively.
In all these figures, the same characters of reference denote corresponding parts.
The article of furniture according' to the invention is formed of a caseor oX-1ike frame of substantially rectangular formation, open at its front and with sides formed by hinged leaves, as shown at 2 (Figs: 1 and 2). At the upper part of the device there is provided an adjustable flange 3 underneath which may be inserted a slidable and adjustable board 4, or a iexible curtain. At one, or both, of the sides there vmay be mounted one or two bedside tables 5 normally arranged within the body or case, but which may be swung outwards, as shown 1n dotted lines, Fig. 1, when the article of furniture is to be used as a bed. At the middle front portion there may be provlded a drawer 6. To the sides of the frame or case is pivotally mounted a bedstead shown at 7, the frame of which is formed of two parts hinged together as shown at 5l, the free ends of the second part 9 being pivoted at 10 to Serial No. 328,766.
the foot portion 11 of the unit. To provide for greater support and stability of the said portion 11, the same is provided with a fixed central bracket 12 resting on the floor by means of rollers or the like.
At their middle portions, the longitudinal members of the bed-frame are provided with supporting uprights 13, preferably of tubular formation and each hinged to the corresponding longitudinal member by means of the arms 14 engaging a slidable collar on the said upright. Within the latter plays a piston indicated at 15, which is connected with the hinges and which normally functions to exert tension upon the bed frame due to the action of springs 16. However, if desired, the said piston may be retained in the open position by mea-ns of a stop or pin 17 which contacts with the piston 15 by wedging thereagainst or by contacting in notches or perforations in the piston.
Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings illustrate a modified form of the article of furniture according to the invention. In this modification, instead o-f folding the front portion of the frame upwardly and inserting it within or beneath the head or upper part thereof, r
the front of the case is constituted by two or more angular panels 18 hingedly connected to the sides of the case and which, when opened outwardly, give clear way for draw ing out the collapsible bedstead.
As will be appreciated from the figures of the drawings, and from the foregoing dcscription, the main feature of the combined article of furniture according to the invention, resides in that the foot or lower end of the bed remains constantly in contact with the floor and in a vertical position, either in the closed or opened position, during the drawing out action, or in the final opened position, the said foot rolling on its rollers, and the folding of the bed frame being effected by means of the hinges interposed between its two halves.
This feature provides for considerable ease in the manipulation of the unit and permits of obtaining considerable advantages over similar devices heretofore proposed and used. Between the longitudinal members of the bed frame there is disposed the usual spring` web, preferably one unit :for each half of the frame, and upon the said spring web may be placed the mattress, with 5 means for securing it to the latter.
The operation Will be readily understood Without further explanation by those versed in the art.
Obviously, different constructional and detail modifications may be made Without eX- ceedng the scope of the presentinyention as clearly defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim is l. ln a folding bed, the combination with head and foot components, of side rails hinged'ly connected at their adjacent inner ends by means of a toggle, said toggle comprising inclined arms, and a connecting collar to which said arms are pivotally secured and a tubular extensible leg secured to the rails and slidabie in the collar, and spring means in the leg for exerting an upward thrust upon the rails during their folding movement.
2. In a folding bed',` the combination with headl and foot components, of side rails hingedly connectedv at their adjacent inner endsV and having` a toggle. said toggle comprising inclined arms, and a connecting collar to' which' said arms are pivotally secured; a tubular upright closed at one end upon which said' collar slides ai piston reciprocable in said upright and secured to the hinges;
spring means interposed between said piston and the closed end of the upright for actuating the piston', and means on the upright for securing the piston when the side rails are in extended position.
40 Tn' testimony whereof I a'x my signature.
ENRIQUE ABELA.
