Serial No. 397,407.
The present invention relates generally to folding furniture and more particularlyto folding recess type beds and has for its prime object to provide an improved foot piece having a piece of furniture such as a folding dressing table or dresser incorporated therein so as to be disposed 1n a convenient and accessible position when the bed is folded down and to be out of the way in a compact relationship with the bed when the bed is folded up.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved apparatus of this nature which is simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, strong and durable, not likely to easily become out of order, easy to manipulate, and otherwise thoroughly ethcient and reliable in use and operation.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of a bed with my improved features incorporated therein,
Figure 2 is a front end view thereof,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the auxiliary pieces of furniture such as a dressing table or dresser' with the mirror structure folded up,
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a frame of any one of a large number of well known folding recess type beds. This frame 5 is swingably mounted in the back supporting structure 6 of conventional construction.
The numeral 7 denotes an inverted U- shaped foot piece which I have illustrated by way of example. Hollow arms 8 project inwardly from intermediate portions of `the sides of the foot piece 7 and are suitably braced through the medium of a vertical tubular brace member 9 and diagonal horizontal brace members 10.
Hingedly mounted sections or extensions 11 are mounted on the lower extremities of the sides of the foot piece. Block 12 is mounted in each side of the foot piece 7 and extends into the respective hollow arm 8 and receives the outer end of a bar 14 which extends between the legs of the foot piece 7 and is reduced intermediate its ends as at 16 and has a roller 15 journaled on the reduced portion thereof, anti-friction means being associated between the roller and the reduced portion 16 as is indicated at 17.
A spring 18 is disposed on the bar 14 and impinges against the block 12 and against a friction block 19 slidable on the bar. The numeral 20 denotes an auxiliary piece of furniture such as a dressing table or dresser including side rear legs 21 of hollow construction having vertical slots 22 in their upper ends through which the rod 14 extends and in the upper portions of these hollow legs 21 are inverted U-shaped guides 23 against which the friction blocks 19 are held by the springs 18 and in which extends the rollers 15 and it will be noted that the reduced portions 16 projects through a slot 25 opposite to slots 22.
Thus it will be seen that this piece of furniture 20 is capable of rocking and sliding on the bar 14, so that the piece of furniture may be maintained substantially vertical during swinging movement of the bed to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1. When the bed is in its final vertical position, the piece of' furniture is then permitted to move vertically and downwardly to assume that position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 and to be retained in such position through the medium of the springs 18 edging the blocks 19 into frictional engagement with the inverted U-shaped guide members 23. Obviously, the springs 18 `bearing against the block 19 will tend to center the piece of furniture so as to prevent binding of i thefrear `legs ofY the pieceof furniture -v Vagainst the ends of the tubulararms 8.
