ti "ii,
12. The sheets 13 are suitably perforate to' receive the post and are also notched at their inner edges to receive the binding 81311138 5 and en age the sheet guide member, as w1ll I be hereinafter described.
m Theembodiment illustrated in Figs. Ito
VII, inclusive, is especially designed 'for supporting a binder and sheets, but may be used for supporting sheets without a bmder, comprises a pair of base members 14 connected by cross pieces 15. The side members .16 are secured to the cross members 15 by means of the hinges 16 so that they may be swung to the erected position, as shown in Figs. I and II, or one of them colla sed, as shown-in Fig. III, or both collapse as shown in Fig. VI
The end member 17 is disposed between the side members to coact therewith in providing a U-shaped holder when both of the side members are erected, as shown mFlg. II, or to provide a pair of holders, as shown in Fig. III, or as in Fig. VI, so that one binder member may be arranged in each holder. The end member is supported for 0 vertical as well as tilting adjustment. To accomplish this,- it isprovided with a air of downwardly projecting plates- 18 avlng vertical slots 19 therein, the slots having. 0pposed seats 20 intermediate their ends. These slots are adapted to coact with the ivots 21 arranged on the inner sides of the ass members 14 so that the end member is guided in its vertical and tilting adjustment one of the side members only is collapsed,
the end member is supported in an inclined relation to the other end member, preferably at right angles thereto, as shown in Fig. III. When both of the guide members areccollapsed, as shown in Fig. VI, the end member is raised'and supported upon the arms of both side members.
' The end member is provided with a sheet guide 23, which is mounted in a slide-way 24 upon the'end member, the slide-way being open at its ends so that the guide may removed or introduced by longitudinal movement.
To locate the guide centrally, I provide a b stop'25 which is supported 'eldingly by the coil spring 26 .so as to e'ngagea socket 27 in the under side of the guid e. The ends of the guides are so positionedthat they serve as rests for the'binderclamping memof the keepers 34. These to supgort the side mem meaeso bers when a binder is arranged in the supas shown .in Figs. III or VI or the adjustment of the sheet from one b inder member to the other.
To close the binder, the device is adjusted with one of the side members collapsed and the other erected. This brings the end member to a position at right angles to the erected side member, which facilitates the alining of the sheet so as to receive the post- 3. The guide 23 serves to slim the sheets with their slots 28 in position to receive the binding strips 5, The guide member is then removed which permits the other binder member being ad usted to position, as shown in Fig. IV, so that the binder may be locked up as desired.
To accommodate thebinding strips, the and member 17 is provided with transverse slots 29 into which the binding strips drop when the binding strips are extended and the binder arranged, for example, as in n the embodiment shown in Figs. I to VI, the side members are supported in their erected position by the bail-like supports 30 which are pivoted on the' inner sides of the base members 14. The cross portions 31 of the supports 30' are eniaged in slots 32 eepers have olfsets 35 at their lower ends adapted to receive the sudpports when the side members are erecte Sprmgs 36 are mounted on the side members to engage the cross portions of the support when the parts are brought to their erected position and hold in the notches of the keepers.
When it is desired to collapse the side members, the supports are pulled outwardly to disengage them from the notches of the keepers and then slid out in the slot as the sides are colla sed.
In Figs. VI to XII I show another embodiment of my invention in which but one of the side members is made adjustable. In this embodiment the side member 37 is mounted upon the base members 38 in a fixed relation, the base member bein provided with an upright ortion 39 a apted or 37. The coactmg s1 e ase members while the end member 42 is hinged at 43 to the lower end of the side member 37. The side member 40 is provided with arms 44 which project under the 'end member 42 to actuate the same. The
them yieldingly member 40 is hinged at 41 to the aaemaeo I to an erected position to coact with the side member 37 and the end member 42 to provide a. U-shaped holder or may be collapsed as shown in Fig.X to provide a pair of holders. The side member is supported in erected position by means of links 45 and 46 which are pivotally connected to each other at 47, the link 46 being connected to the side member at 48, while the link 45 is connected to the base at 49. A stop 50 is provided to limit the movement of the links and support them in their erected or extended position. When the side member I 40 is collapsed a pair of binder member holders is provided, the same as shown in Fig. III. This embodiment of my invention is quite satisfactory for various purposes and uses.
The end member 42 is provided with a guide member 51 corresponding to the guide members 23. To vary the capacity of the holder, ll provide a follower 52 which may be adjusted against'the side member 37, as shown in Fig. TX or to an intermediate position, as shown in Fig. XIII. This follower is provided with arms 53 which project down at the sides of the end member and is provided with shoes 54 which ride. against the under side of the end members so that the follower is supported in an adjusted position. The follower has holes 55 alined with holes 56 in the side member 37 to receive the posts 12 when adjusted as shown in Fig. XII. The follower may be shown in the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. ll toVI but l[ have not shown it in that connection as deemed the illus- .tration of Fig. VlIll sulii'cient.
My improved binder device is especially 3 desirable in so-called Machine Accounting although it is advantageous for use, in the keeping of records by hand. By its use binders and sheets are supported so that their manipulation is very greatly, facilitated.
I have illustrated and described my improvement as l have embodied the same in practice. I have not attem ted to illustrate or describe certain embo lments which ll contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which copending application, Ser. No.
