UNITED- STATES DAVID BARRON, 0F DORCHESTER, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COPYHOLDERQ Application lcd September 6, 1924.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID BAnRoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Copyholders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This inventio-n relates to vices `and has for its object the provision of a novel glazed or glass covered frame structure within which may be held pictures, maps, papers, pamphlets, books, or the like preparatory to making photographic copies thereof, the device being designed particularly for use by commercial photographers, photo-engravers, photostat operators and the like.
An important object is the provision of a copy holder which is so constructed as to be capable of automatically adjusting itself to the thickness of the pamphlet, book, or the like held within the device so that there will be an absolute and flat contact of the copy with the glass front of the device so that rumpling, buckling, or wrinkling, of the paper or book pages will be prevented, thereby facilitating the making of accurate and unblemished photographic copies.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a device of this character embodying structural features which will constitute a great refinement in devices of this general class, the device being moreover simple and'inexpensive to make, easy to use, efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing it in open position;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device in closed position and holding a book;
Figure 3 is an edge elevation; v
Figure Lis across section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section showing the use of the book cover holding spring;
Figure 6 is a detail view of the spring; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a bracket.
copy holding de- Serial No. 736,316.
Referring more particularly tothe drawings, I have shown my device as comprising a main or relatively stationary frame 10 represented as being of rectangular shape and of any desired size and materials. This main frame is formed as a back or board 11 formed with an ope-ning. 12. Secured to the back are hangers 13 by means of which the device may be suspended from a` copy board. On the front of the board or back are cleats 14.
Fitting within the opening 12 is a presser block or follower 15 which is naturally of corresponding shape and size to the opening and which is provided at its rear side or face with angular brackets 16 secured thereto in any desired manner and slidably engaged on rods 17 secured to and extending Arearwardly from the back 11 at opposite sides of the opening 12 therein. Surrounding these rods are coil springs 18 which abut against the rear faces of the brackets 16 for the pur pose of normally urging the follower or presser plate 15 forwardly with respect to the back. The ends of the rods 17 projecting beyond the back are formed with heads 19 and carry washers 20 against which the springs abut.
Hinged at 21 upon the free edge of one side of the stationary frame is the door or cover 22 which is of frame construction and it carries a glass pane 23. Though glass is specified, it is obvious that celluloid or other transparent material may be used if desired. The glass pane 23 is of the same size as the follower or presser plate 15 so that a paper, pamphlet, book, or the like disposed on the follower plate will be engaged by the glass pane so as to permit free visibility of the copy. Suitable catches 24 are pro-vided on the opposite side edge co-operating with catch elements 25 on the free edge of the door or cover for normally holding it in closed posit-ion.
In the use of the device, it is of course necessary to open the door or cover 22 to permit the copy to be placed upon the follower or presser board 15 after which the door is closed and held by the catches 24. It is evident that quite a large number of small pictures or the like may be mounted on the presser board or follower at the same time. It is likewise true that a book represented at B may be placed upon the follower and be held against the glass pane 23 in exactly the same manner as an ordinary at the thinner or smaller section thereof asV sheet of paper owing to the fact that the -follower or presser plate is capable of' moving to a position considerably back of the rear wall 11 or yback of the stationary trarne.
This is permitted 'owing to the fact that the angular brackets 16 have their outer ends located rearwardly ofthe back` In case the book is open at some point otherY than at its middle it is evident that one side or portion will bethicker'than lthe other so that there would not be proper contact of both of the exposed pages with the glass pane Q3. To take Vcare of this deli* ciencyI make use of abow spring 26 which is adaptedt'o be inserted between the follower or presser board 15 and the back "of the book clearly shown in the drawings. y
' From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be readily apf parent that I have thus provided Va simply constructed,
inexpensive and very easily used `device for holding the copy of various kinds, the device having Vthe advantage of being easily capable of being hung or lotherwise supported upon ,the copy board or other support u'sed in connection with a camera for' the typeV used by commercial photographers, photo-engravers, 'photostat operators and the like. advantage is that thefcopy', regardless of its nature, is so arranged that the exposed sur- Ano'ther distinct l face will always be in the `same plane, there-v In a copy'holder, a relativelyvstationary Y frame havinga bafckzwall formed withy an opening, a presser board located within the opening, angular brackets secured upon the rear side of the presser board-and having laterally'extending ends located rearwardly of the' back o the stationary fram-@guide Y rods vsecured to and projecting rearwardly beyond the back,l said'brackets being slidable onsaid rods, abutment elements on the Y youter ends of thel rods,
rounding the rods and engaging .said abutV ment elements and the brackets, and -a door tor 'closing the rontof the rame,rthe door having a transparent panel therein of a size to engage upon the presser board.
In testimonyv whereof I hereunto afliX v11u37 signature. v, Y. i DAVID BARRON..
