SAMUEL CHITTENDEN, OF WILLIMANTIC, CONNECTICUT.
EMPRCVEMENT EN SAFETV"PGCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,845, dated J1me 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL QHITTENDEN, of Willimantic, in the county of Windham and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Pockets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an inner elevation of one side of a pair of pants containing my improved pocket. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the safety-pad as applied to the front'of a pocket. Fig. 3 is a section of thesame on line a: a: of Fi g. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section of said pad, showing a modification in its construction.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The means usually employed for protecting pockets and preventing them from being cut open are constructed of or from metal in some form, such as plates, chains, interlocked rings, 850., all of which are open to serious objections by reason of their weight, cumbersomeness, and expense. To obviate these objections is the design of my invention, which consists, principally, in the employment of abrasive material upon or within the exterior side or portion of a pocket, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It consists, further, in the employment of a detachable pad protector upon the outer side of a pocket, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a pocket, of usual construction, suspended from the inner side-'of a garment, B, and provided with an exterior opening, 0. A second pocket, D, is attached to or upon the rear side of the pocket A, and communicates with the interior of the latter, near its upper end, by means of an opening, which is inclosed by a flap, E, that swings downward and is secured in place by one or more buttons, 6.
As thus constructed, it will be seen that access to the inner pocket cannot be had by thieves without cutting, as the amount of manipulation necessary in order to unbutton the flap E and then remove the contents of said pocket would necessarily alarm the wearer and defeat the designs of the thief.
The most common method employed for obtaining access to pockets is to cut them open by means of a knife-blade set in a ring, so as to conceal it from observation. As these knifeblades are of necessity very small it is requisite that they should have an exceedingly keen edge, in order to accomplish the desired object; and if their edge is but slightly dulled, so much effort is required to force them through the cloth as to attract the attention of the party being operated upon. In order to provide against this class of operators I apply upon or within the outer side of the pocket the granulated emery of commerce, or other equivalent abrasive material, in such quantities and in such a manner as that, while not interfering materially with the flexibility of the fabric, it shall be impossible for any portion of the same to be out without causing the edge of the knife-blade to come into contact with some grains of emery, the effect of which is to instantly destroy the sharpness of said edge, and prevent the further operation of the same.
abrasive material with the covering of the pocket.
For use with clothing that requires to be washed I employ a pad, F, which corresponds in general size and shape to or with the pocket, and is attached to its outer side by means of buttons f, so as to be easily and quickly removed when desired. This pad is constructed in the same manner as the outer side of the pocket, hereinbefore described, the abrasive material contained therein operating as a bar to the passage of the knife.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, What I claim as new 1s- 1. In combination with the exterior covering of a pocket, abrasive material, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The detachable protective pad F, combined with the exterior of the pocket A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of April, 1872.
SAMUEL OHITTENDEN.
