I Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 21, 1917. Serial No. 163,680.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, ERNEST R. BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Safety v Another object of the invention is to pro- L. videa series of flaps, with means for 1nter-' locking the same with the main flaps of the envelop.
. Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for securing the interlocking fia s to the-under face of the main flaps.
Xnother object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost. 7
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to he hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, refhad to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or" corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: Figurel is a rear view of an envelop supplied with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section onlme 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. his a plan view of the blank before being folded.
.In these figures, 1 indicates the envelop supplied with the bottom flap 2, the top flap 3 and the two end flaps 4L and 5. The top flap is provided with an extension strip 6 1ntermediate its ends and the bottom flap 18 provided with the two extensions 7 and 8, each of saidextensions being located intermediate the two converging edges of the said flap. These three extensions form additional closing flaps and are provided with adhesive substances on their outer surfaces at their extreme ends and the top flap is provided with two slots' 9 and 10 for receiving the ends of the flaps 7 and 8 and the bottom flap 2 is provided with a slot 11 for receiving the flap 6. It will be seen that the flaps 6, 7 and 8 enter the slots from the top or outer surface of the main flap 3 so that they cover portions of the adhesive coated edgesof the main flaps.
After the letter is inserted in the envelop, the adhesive material on the outer surfaces of the three flaps and that on the under surface of the top flap ismoistened and then the envelop without mutilatmg the same.
It is thought from the foregoing that the Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
the flaps 6, 7 and 8 are inserted in their re advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
v I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
' A safety envelop including a pair of main flaps, the upper main fla being provided with'a pair of slits paralle to the longitudinal edge of the envelop and adjacent the lat- 'eral edges thereof, said flap being provided with an elongated tongue at the juncture of the two converging edges thereof, the lower main flap having a pair of elongated tongues which extend parallel to and adjacent the lateral edges of the envelop to be received in the slits in the upper flap so that said tongues overlap the converging edges of the upper flap, said lower fla being provided with a central slit parall to the longitudinal edges of the envelop to' receive "the a sume tongues of the upper flag I so that said In testimeny whereof I affix my signatlme' tongues overlie the lower mam-flap, and said in presence of two witnesses.
