Description

v G. W. STEIN. COMBINED wmoow SASH FASTENER AND LIFT.
Patented Sept. 3,1918;
INVE\ITOR Seawall Ufa}? WITNESSES ATTORNEY GEORGE w. STEIN, or ci noAeo, ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of-Cool: .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combined WVindow- Sash Fasteners and Lifts, of which the followingis a specification. j w
r This invention relates to sash fasteners and the main objectj thereof .isto-provide a simple-and efficient fastener of this character so constructed as to perform the double functionof a window lock and sash lift.
Another object is the provision of a swinging locking element mounted on the sash and having means for cooperation with means on the frame for locking-the sash in adjusted position.
Another object is to provide a fastener of.
this character so constructed as to provide auxiliary strengthening means for it wheu used as a lift to adapt it to withstand strains exerted thereon by a heavy window.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a window showing this invention applied,
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section through the window showing the locking device in side elevation and inoperative locking position, and V Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation showing the device in unlocked position with parts broken out for conveniencein illustration.
In the embodiment illustrated, the lock or fastener 1 constituting this invention is shown applied to a lower sash S mounted in the usual frame F. Two of these fasteners 1 are'shown arranged on opposite sides of the sash and are designed to lock the sash in adjusted position and as they are exactly alike one only will be described in detail.
Each fastener 1 includes an attaching plate 2 secured in position by a plurality of screws or other fastening elements 3 and Specification of Letters Patent;

upon the inner longitudinal edge of which is formed spaced bearings 'and 5, the latter being of greater length than they former. The pivoted locking element consistsof an elongated body'portion formed from a single length of rod mounted to turn in vthe bearings at and 5 and having a locking loop 6 formed Jintermediately thereof and posi tioned between the opposed. inner ends of. said bearings when said element is in .assembled position. This loop 6 which is here shownVU-shaped extends laterally from the body portion of the locking element at right angles to the end loops to -be de-' scribed, which adapts it to operate not only as a lock. when in one position but as a lift 1 when swung in the opposite position. The
ends of the rod extend beyond the outer .endsof the bearings 4 and 5 and are bent laterally and then inwardly to form substantially triangular shaped loops 7 and 8,
as is shown clearly in Fig. 2 and which are designed when the locking element is in inoperative position to be engaged with headed studs 9 positioned on the window sash S so as to be interlockingly engaged with the loops 7 and 8 when the locking element is swung inwardly into inoperative or lifting position. It will thus be seen that these headed studs reinforce said element and adapt it to withstand strains exerted thereon by a heavy window sash when the device is used as a lift, the U-shaped locking loop 6 forming a hand gri when the device is so used.
A plurality of headed studs 10 are carried by the stiles of the window frame F at longitudinally spaced intervals, any desired number being employed and which are designed to be engaged by the loops 6 when the locking element is swung into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so that the weight of the window may be borne by said studs and the window held positively against vertical movement when these elements are so engaged. These locking loops 6 when engaged with the studs 10 reliably prevent all possible movement of the window sash until the locking element is swung in its bearings to disengage the loop 6 from said studs.
It will thus be seen that a window equipped with these fastening devices may be raised or lowered to any desired extent and securely locked in adjusted position by swingthe ventilator shown at V in Fig. 3 and thereby assist in retaining the ventilator in operative position, preventing all possibility of the entrance of dust or insects at the ends of the ventilator.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will. be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim r The combination with a Window frame having a sash slidable therein, of a fastener carried by said sash and comprising an at taching plate having its inner edge rolled tobform longitudinally spaced alined bearings, a locking element pivotally mounted in said bearings and formed from a single length of rod bent intermediately of its ends to form a U-shaped locking loop and with its terminals extended beyond said bearings and. bent laterally and then inwardly to form loops, said U-shaped loop extending at right angles to the end. loops, studs carried by said sash in position to be engaged by the end loops of said locking element when the element is swung into one position and studs carried by the frame for engagement by the locking loop when the element is swung to another position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. STEIN.
